---------------------------------------
During their entire friendship, Cricket and Carolina had only a few arguments. These were almost always over petty things such as misplaced but thought to be stolen crayons when they were younger, to disputes over who belonged best with which band member when they were fifteen. None of these fights ever lasted forever, and they usually always made up within two days at the most.
But this time, it was different. Carolina went out of her way to avoid the brunette, which was really saying something considering they lived together and the house wasn't a mansion. They hadn't spoken a word to each other since their argument Saturday morning, and it was now Monday morning and Cricket wasn't sure she even had a ride to school.
As she climbed down the stairs fully dressed and as emotionally ready as a teenager could be for school, she heard the sound of her friend's car running in the driveway and sighed in relief. She locked the front door behind her and hurried to the passenger seat, not wanting to make Carolina wait any longer than she needed to for her.
The entire ride to school was silent, and it was even worse because the radio was kept off. It usually always played, the girls singing along to the shitty pop songs the local station put on even though they didn't always know the words.
It was awkward, to say the least.
Once they arrived at school, the blonde parked and got out of the car, walking away before Cricket had even emerged from her own seat. She glared after her, but didn't bother to chase the girl as she headed off to her own first period class.
As usual, her classes seemed to last ages. She earned herself the privilege to stand for the remainder of second period when she fell asleep twice, and almost got sent to the office when she began nodding off as she leaned against the wall. She wasn't tired, so to speak, just incredibly bored - math always beat her interest in the subject to a pulp.
Lunch was awkward. Carolina had arrived before her and was sitting at a table with Riley, but the moment Cricket approached, she got up and walked away. Cricket sighed as she dropped her bag of pretzels onto the table and sank into a plastic seat.
"What's up with her?" Riley asked, biting into her apple. Cricket shrugged sadly.
"I pissed her off on Saturday, and she hasn't spoken to me since. She won't even look at me if she can help it."
"What did you do?"
The brunette hesitated. She rarely kept things from Riley, but how would she explain what had happened? "It's uh...complicated."
Riley's eyebrow rose. "Is it now?"
Sighing, Cricket dropped her head in her hands. "I just...Can you keep a secret?"
The raven haired girl cocked her own head and gave her a look that said, 'seriously?'
Another sigh. "I'm sorry, I just...." She shrugged and launched into the story of what had happened that weekend, and the entire time the smaller girl listened intently. When she was finished, Riley nodded for a few seconds.
"I think you need to talk to her. Really really talk to her, I mean. What do those cliché chick movies call them, heart to hearts?"
"I don't know..." Cricket said uneasily. "What if she writes me off again?"
"Girl, you and I both know her. I see how she is with you. You're her absolute best friend in the whole world. As upset as she is, I know she misses you. She's probably struggling with something and wants you to be there for her, but she doesn't know how to let you know what it is."
Cricket thought long and hard about this for a few moments. "Riley, you're a genius."
The girl grinned so wide that Cricket thought her lips were going to jump right off of her face. "I try."
For the rest of the school day, the brunette thought up a plan in her head. By the time the final bell rang, she knew just what she was going to say to her best friend.
Now if she could only get Carolina to speak to her.
