After that night, neither girl spoke about what had almost happened. They went on about their lives as they had before the 'fight,' though it was easy to see they still felt awkward about the whole thing. It was easy to act like everything was okay in school, but when the pair met up with Riley after school on Thursday for pizza, the girl knew instantly that something had happened between them.
So on Friday during lunch, while Carolina was up getting food, she turned to Cricket.
"What happened between you and her?"
That was Riley for you, always blunt about things. She didn't like to beat around the bush.
"Nothing." Cricket lied, but she should have known better.
Riley's hand thumped the brunette upside the head, and Cricket squeaked as her own hand moved to the spot that had been hit.
"Bitch." She muttered, glaring at her dark haired friend.
Riley smirked for a moment, but then her expression turned serious. "Crick, I know there's something going on between you two. So tell me! Did you guys hook up? Is she a lesbian? Are you? Are-"
"Shut the hell up!" The brunette hissed, throwing a glance around the cafeteria. "Didn't anyone ever teach you how to whisper?"
The smaller girl blushed slightly, but she was instantly refocusing on the situation at hand. "Didn't anyone ever teach you not to keep secrets? Details, Cricket! I'm curious here."
Huffing impatiently, Cricket gave in. She dropped her gaze when she spoke, and her voice was barely above a whisper. "We...we almost kissed."
"What?" Riley half-yelled, earning some looks from kids around them. She instantly flushed and sank in her seat. "Sorry. But seriously?"
"Yeah..." Cricket said, looking off into space as she recalled the memory. "We just made up, and we were looking at each other and she leaned in, and I don't know why but I did too, and then her mom knocked on the door and we moved away."
Riley was nodding to show she understood, practically bouncing in her seat. "How did you feel about it?"
Cricket opened her mouth to answer, but she never got a chance to. She snapped it shut as her best friend returned with a tray of food, passing some of it to the other girl as she sat down.
"What'd I miss?" She asked as she shoved a chicken nugget in her mouth.
"Nothing." The two girls responded instantly, and they shot each other a look.
Carolina looked at them funny, but if she suspected anything she didn't speak up about it. They chatted about little things until their lunch period was over, and then went their separate ways as they headed back to class.
Riley's unanswered question played on her mind all day. How did she feel about the almost-kiss between herself and her best friend? She thought back to that moment, how her heart had been racing, how her body seemed to react on its own...
She was suddenly questioning everything between her and Carolina.
All those movie nights they spent cuddling up to each other, jokingly treating each other like a couple would, and of course what had nearly happened just a few nights ago.
But all best friends acted like lesbians toward each other....didn't they?
Had all those things meant more to Carolina, and Cricket was now just beginning to see it?
One thing was for sure, Cricket didn't know exactly how she felt about her best friend anymore. Was there something more between them that what they had both originally thought?
Cricket had never given much thought to her sexuality. Since her parents died, she buried her mind in her school work to serve as a distraction. Sure, she found boys attractive, but she'd never given much thought to actually being with one.
She wasn't quite sure she knew how relationships worked, outside of what she saw on TV.
Now that she thought about it, she had never had her first kiss either. And Carolina was almost her first.
Would she end up actually being her first?
