Carolina's words played like a broken record in the brunette's mind all day while they were at school on Monday. Riley had been more than ecstatic to have her two friends back, though she was slightly upset with Cricket for leaving her alone.

"She would have been okay on her own!" The black haired girl had said, but Cricket had been quick to shoot her a look, and Riley had quieted down.

Lunch was when Riley seemed to suspect something was up between them. But of course, she had suspected something last week when they had gone out for pizza and she noticed how awkward the two were being together.

Cricket really didn't think they were acting any differently, but then again she was lost in her own mind. She was chewing on a bite of her sandwich and almost choked when the girl said, "So did you guys hook up or what?"

Both the brunette and Carolina stared hard at their friend, who merely shrugged.

"Just wondering. You're all awkward."

Carolina looked over at Cricket, and the two shared a wordless conversation. The brunette shrugged and then nodded, and Carolina turned back to Riley.

"We kissed."

The smaller girl dropped her chip. "Are you serious? Are you guys like, a thing now?"

Cricket cringed - they had never finished discussing this last night. Carolina had abruptly fallen asleep, and the other girl didn't bother to wake her up. She'd gone back to her own room, where sleep didn't come nearly as easy to her as she lie awake all night, thinking about the events that had unfolded that evening. That morning, she thanked the heavens for coffee.

Neither girl responded to Riley's question, and this frustrated the raven haired female. Huffing, she dropped the subject and didn't speak a word to them the rest of the day.

Cricket stayed quiet the entire ride home, and because she was, Carolina was too. Again the awkwardness surrounded them, and this time Cricket didn't know how to fix it. After all, how do you bring up to your best friend that you think you want to be more than just best friends with her?

And even if they did become 'more than,' what would everyone think? She didn't know the girl's parents' views on the topic of homosexuality, but even if they were accepting, they surely wouldn't stand for the girls being under the same roof if they knew they were together. Right?

It was, all of it, so complicated and Cricket didn't know where to begin to simplify it, if there was even a way to do just that. Finally, she decided to just let fate run its course.

If she and Carolina were meant to be, they would end up that way. If not...Well, Cricket didn't know. She was secretly hoping that fate was on her side for once.

That night, after dinner had ended and the girls were walking back the hallway, Carolina pulled Cricket into her room. Cricket was surprised and curious, but her heart was thumping in her chest in anticipation.

Once they were seated on the blonde's bed and facing each other, Carolina took a deep breath.

"I've been thinking..." She began, eyes roaming around the room. "About what Riley said."

Cricket only nodded, knowing exactly what her friend was talking about though she was unsure of what to say.

"And about what I want...and how none of this makes sense, but at the same time how it makes perfect sense."

Green eyes gazed into hazel ones for a long moment, but at Cricket's obvious confusion, the girl continued to speak.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is..." She stopped again, sighing. Hands reached up to tangle in her golden locks, a clear sign she was frustrated.

Meanwhile, Cricket's heart was racing, and she didn't know what to do herself. Her own hands fidgeted in her lap as her mind raced.

What was Carolina trying to say? Sure, the brunette thought she knew, but she didn't want to go assuming things or getting her hopes up only to be wrong and have them come crashing down.

But she couldn't exactly just sit here, either. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she heard a voice tell her to take a chance.

You'll never know if you don't try.

Cricket hesitated for a split moment before she leaned over, fingers hooking themselves under the blonde's chin as she gently forced her head up. The blonde obeyed, her own hands falling and confusion prominent in her features for the few tiny seconds before their lips met.

It was soft and gentle for about two heartbeats, and then it was like a match had been lit. Contrary to their first two kisses, this one wasn't careful. No, this kiss made it seem as though they'd done it one thousand times and would do it one thousand more. Cricket's arms had made their way around the girl's waist and was pulling her closer until their bodies were pressed up against each other. Carolina's hands were clasped tightly on the brunette's shoulders, and neither showed signs of wanting to pull away anytime soon.

This feels so right...

And suddenly, the kiss was broken as both girls needed to come up for air. They sat there, still wrapped up in each other, breathing heavily as they tried to calm themselves down.

Carolina grinned widely, breath fanning Cricket's face as she rested her forehead against the other. "That's the third time you've kissed me back."

An eyebrow rose, but Cricket only shrugged as she leaned back on the bed until she was laying down. Carolina immediately followed suit, but chose to settle on top of her best friend instead. Arms immediately encircled the blonde and held her close.

"I want you..." The girl on top whispered, and turned her head to look at Cricket.

Cricket's stomach filled with butterflies, and she softly kissed Carolina's nose. "You've got me."

"To be mine." Carolina said again, so soft it was barely audible.

Cricket froze up. Oh, she wanted to be with Carolina so badly. But there were risks, so many risks...

Didn't I tell you earlier that you never know what will happen if you don't try?"

The girl grimaced briefly as the thought came to mind, but at last she decided to hell with being careful. Life would be boring if risks weren't made, and Carolina was definitely a risk worth taking.

"Yes." The brunette whispered with a tiny smile. "I'm yours."
