An Awakening

6 am is the time I wake up. Not even with my alarm.

Today is going to be a great day.

I practically sleep walk down the stairs to make some coffee. Matthew is at the table reading a newspaper.

"Morning, big senior," he smiles.

"Morning," I half slur, half speak. He chuckles at my obvious tiredness but doesn't comment on it.

30 minutes and a lot more energy later, I walk back upstairs to get ready. I braid my hair and throw on a striped long sleeve and black jeans. Typical.

Diana: see you in 15 minutes!

Anne: yup, sadly

Diana: shut up

I laugh and put my phone in my pocket. I grab my keys, say goodbyes to Marilla and Matthew, and start the journey to Avonlea High.

Flashbacks from my first day pass through my head.

"Excuse me, what are you doing at my locker?"

I turn around. A boy, with black curly hair and hazel eyes looks at me confusedly.

The first time I saw Gilbert. I remember feeling so nervous. It's crazy how much he affected me even back then, when I barely knew him. Why am I thinking about this now?

I shake my head and park my car, walking into the brick building.

A quick glance at my schedule leads me to my locker, the right one this time. After grabbing my things I make my way towards Diana and Ruby at the end of the hall.

"Hey guys," I smile.

"Anne!" Diana squeals, hugging me. She sure is wide awake.

Ruby just gives me a nod and I glance at Diana in confusion. She gives me a look saying 'I don't know but we'll talk about it later.'

The three of us walk to first hour since we all have it together.

"It's crazy how excited I was to come here last year," I voice my thoughts out loud.

"I remember you were so ecstatic, it was like a breath of fresh air. That first day I knew we were destined to be friends," Diana replies.

I shove her jokingly. "So cheesy. But for real, I feel so different now."

"It happens to all of us. I know that old Anne is still in there, you just adapted to the hell that is Avonlea," Diana says, but before I can reply we arrive to class.

The day goes by surprisingly fast. It's finally last hour and I have AP World, the class I've been dying to take.

History is my favorite subject. Especially ancient history.

My thoughts are disrupted when I see who else is in here. Ruby sits in the far corner, and I'm about to make my way over until I see who's in front of her.

Gilbert is standing with his arms crossed and a furious look on his face. Ruby looks angry as well. The two talk quietly to each other, obviously mad.

Before it gets too heated, the teacher walks in causing them to glance up. I finally unfreeze and quickly make my way to a seat. When I look up, Gilbert is sitting in the back with a pissed off look on his face while Ruby just seems annoyed.

What did I just witness?

The entire period goes by incredibly slow and my excitement from earlier has dissipated. My curiosity is getting the best of me. I need to talk to Gilbert. Or Ruby?

The bell rings and we all shuffle into the hallway. I lock eyes with Ruby and am about to make my way towards her, but Gilbert beats me to it.

"Just so you know, Ruby; it's done," the curly haired boy says.

"What is?" She asks.

"You know what," Gilbert replies and Ruby rolls her eyes.

"Okay, I'm sorry."

"It's fine," he says cooly. With that, he turns around to leave the classroom and finally notices me.

I probably look extremely confused right now, but he just looks away and briskly leaves the room.

I slowly make my way towards the blonde and ask awkwardly, "Are you... alright?"

I'm expecting a crying Ruby but instead she gives me a smile. "I'm fantastic."

"What just happened?" I laugh in utter confusion.

"We broke up I guess," she shrugs.

"Why? H-how? You're not upset?"

"He found out I've been hanging out with Jerry. He was too nice to end it for no reason and I didn't know how either, so I'm glad he finally did," she says nonchalantly.

"Jerry?! What?" I'm so shook right now.

When I mention his name I see her smile. "Yeah, Jerry. He made me realize my thing for Gilbert was nothing in comparison to how I feel around him. I was only obsessed with the idea of Gilbert, not him."

"I'm happy for you..?" I smile in confusion and chuckle. She smiles widely too and pulls me in for a hug.

"Thank you, Anne. Now, go talk to him. I know you want to."

I pull away. "What?"

She sighs. "Listen, I know you. You like him. He likes you. I'm sorry it's taken me this long to realize how I truly feel. I'm sorry for all the pain I put you through."

I feel my eyes fog up. "Ruby, you never caused me pain. Yes, I like him, but our friendship is so important to me."

"It's important to me too. But seriously, go talk to him right now. I feel bad."

"Okay, only if you're sure," I say sheepishly.

"I'm sure."

"You guys, this is adorable and all, but I really need to get some work done."

Ruby and I slowly turn around to see the history teacher sitting at her desk. With red faces, we slowly leave the room.

"She was in there the whole time?!"
