I'm laughing with Two-Bit as I finish handing out the cake. He's insisting on another piece but he hasn't even finished his first, and I keep telling him no, but he just keeps begging with that goofy look on his face. That's when I hear it. The familiar impact of fist against skin, the sound of someone groaning in pain. Darry gets up quick, looking toward me, and I rush into the kitchen to see Dally loosely holding his gut and glaring up at Soda almost in disbelief. Soda's shaking his fist off and he's fuming. On instinct I go to Dally - it's just second nature and plus he's the one whose hurt. "Did you just fucking hit me?" Dally asks, looking like he's genuinely surprised.

"Holy shit, Soda, what the hell were you thinking?" I yell, gripping onto Dally's arm tightly as he straightens up. He looks like he wants to kill him, but he's holding back and I don't know why.

"He was looking at you! He - he said -" Soda starts mumbling, talking loud and fast.

"He was looking at me?!" I repeat. "He was looking at me so you hit him? Have you lost your damn mind?"

Darry steps between all of us, defusing the situation. The rest of the gang is in the doorway wide eyed and I want to scream. "Hey now, let's cool it." He says. "Soda, maybe take a walk around the block, calm down a little."

"Me?" He asks, sounding exasperated, staring at Dally. He's straightened up now and rubbing his stomach, and I'm still dumbfounded that he hasn't done anything to Soda. Dally's usually looking for a fight, but now when he actually has the opportunity he ignores it? That didn't seem like him at all.

"No, you know what, I think I'll go." I say quickly, looking at Soda like I can't believe this. "I need to think." and when I say this, his face falls.

" and when I say this, his face falls

"Yeah, I'll come with you." Dally says despite the fact that I just said I wanted to think. I don't have it in me to fight right now anymore. I look toward Johnny and I melt a little, feeling so bad that this shit had to happen right now. Dally seems to pick up on this because he pats him on the shoulder and tells him we'll be right back. Johnny seems fine though, if anything I think he's just surprised.

I know Soda is just going to get more pissed that Dally's with me, but at this exact moment I really couldn't give a shit. Once I get outside I exhale loudly, holding in tears. "This is ridiculous." I get out, not wanting to have this walk be in silence. "I don't get why you guys can't just put this behind you."

Dally doesn't say anything at first as we walk, but after a while he clears his throat. "I'm sorry." He gets out and I'm almost stunned. I never heard him apologize, to me or anyone else. "Soda isn't ever gunna like me hanging around you, you get that right?" He asks and I don't know what to say.

"You don't make it easy for him."

"He doesn't make it easy either, he just came seeking me out and punched me!" He says, laughing. "I'm not doing anything I haven't done the entire time we were friends."
