↠ How I Lost My Mother
"Will you turn that down? It's making me go deaf" My mother says glancing at me while she drove down the dark streets.
I nodded my head at the song I didn't even know the name of.
"No mom! This is my jam!" I say yelling above the music and fist pumping in the air.
"Why does the singer sound like a cat that had it's tail stuck in the door?" She asks groaning. I was about to answer her when the car driving in the front of ours, came to an abrupt stop.
I lower down the music and we study what was happening but we didn't see anything out of the ordinary. The man in front of our car suddenly comes out of his car, but bringing a gun in his hand, looking panicked and scared.
"Mom? What's going on?" I ask.
She tries to open her window and look out.
"I can't see anything, it's too dark" She mumbles trying to search for anything funny. The man turns to us and yells.
"TURN AROUND! TURN AROUND!" He yells at us and at the cars behind us.
"Why?!" My mom yells.
"JUST GO!" He yells and my mom automatically shuts the window. She turns the car for a U-Turn and we drove off, the cars behind us following.
"Mom, what did you think that was?" I ask and guns firing interrupted her replies. I look behind me and I see people, shooting, people. My eyes widen in horror.
"Mom, they're shooting people" I say softly, a bit shaky. She looks at the rearview mirror and she frowns.
"No sweetie, they're shooting zombies"
"MOM WATCH OUT!" I scream as I see someone suddenly standing in the middle of the road, just staring at the car that was approaching him in full speed. I took a glance of his dull white eyes before I felt my mother swerve the car too hard, and us tumbling down and down. Everything was spinning too fast and before I knew it, I felt a hard blow on my head and I lost consciousness.

"Honey, Ara? Ara, wake up sweetie" I hear my mom's faint voice and I try my hardest to move my head and arms.
"Mom?" I whisper blinking my eyes open slowly. I see her crying and happiness as I woke up. I sat up quickly and hugged her.
"What's going on?" I ask softly.
"The apocalypse, that's what's going on" She replies. Suddenly I remembered. Driving away and almost hitting a zombie in the middle of the road, and us crashing.
"Where are we?" I ask as I look around the unfamiliar wooden walls. I lay on a bed in the middle of the house, but I widened my eyes as I see a dead man in the corner, a bullet hole in his head.
"Mom, what did you do to that man?" I ask softly.
"He wasn't a man anymore, he was.... infected" She replies.
"Infected?"
"He was one of those things. Honey, you heard the news a few weeks ago right? About a virus that broke out?"
"Yeah, I did mom" I softly reply. Had it spread? I thought they had it under control.
"It's spreading. It's turning people info flesh eating zom-"
"Please call them the infected mom. I'm not fond of the z word" I cut her.
"Sorry. They're being turned into infected people. And it's only a matter of time until the whole state gets infected before the whole world. Listen to me, our lives might not be the same after tonight. I just want you to know that okay? Your friends might not be your friends anymore, the house isn't our home, but as long as we got each other, we're going to be fine okay?" She says stroking my hair. I nod and she hugs me. As I hold her tightly, we hear moans and groans outside and I slowly felt tears form in my eyes.
I've never felt so scared in my life. My heart beat was so rapid, and my sweat was racing down my forehead.
"I'm scared" I whisper.
"Don't. Fear is what's going to get you killed. You have to stand up and be strong, don't let your emotions affect what you do. Promise me that" She says holding my shoulders, looking at me seriously, the amount of fear in her eyes the same as mine.
"Promise me" She says again and I nod slowly.
"Promise"

I waited for my mom in the same spot in the cabin, the scent of the man's decaying body dominating the smell of wood in the cabin. I hug my knees and stare at the door, where my mom went out last week.
Yes, I waited for her for a week. She's scavenged food the day after we arrived here, and we stacked up on it. We've been staying here for almost a month now, and my mom had been gone for 8 days. My head's telling me she's gone, but my heart says to wait for her.
I haven't seen what the world looked like after it broke out. I've been stuck in this cabin from the start. I know she's somewhere out there, but I don't know if she's alive. I have to find her.
The knowledge of mom getting lost in this infected world, ignited anger inside my heart. I had to find her. The image of all the infected towering over her, made me furious.
"Fear is what's going to get you killed. You have to stand up and be strong, don't let your emotions affect what you do" My mom's voice rang in my head.
I push myself out of the bed. I start scavenging around the house for any weapons. I see a shotgun lying beside the grey man's body. I sigh and grabbed it, and made sure it was loaded. I reached down and searched the man's pockets and found a knife, useful for when I lose all my ammo. I walked over to my backpack in the corner to find the typical things you bring for a camp out. Clothes, flashlights, ropes, batteries, some food to last me a week if I ration properly, 3 bottles of water and a gun with extra bullets. I felt the tip of a paper and I furrowed my eyebrows. I pulled it out and I almost cried. There was a picture, of my dad, mom and I, celebrating for my birth.
Sadly dad passed away in a plane crash and my mom was left to raise me up herself. She was the best woman I know, my role model. I felt my tears race down my cheeks.
I ignored it and zipped my bag up. I put it on and tied my hair into a ponytail. I walked to the door in pure confidence, but faded when I opened the door. Everything was dead.
I see people stumbling around, flesh ripped out of their skin, moaning and groaning as they dragged their heavy-looking feet. These aren't people. Their infected, and they're overpowering the living.
"Holy shit" I sigh.
