My heartbeat wouldn't slow down.

The closer I got to the detention level, the harder it pounded against my ribs. It felt alive, like it was trying to warn me of something my mind hadn't figured out yet.

After collecting my upgraded weapons and arming myself with the bracelets and guns, I'd heard from the others that Natasha had interrogated Loki and uncovered the rest of his plan. Whatever she'd learned, it wasn't good.

I knew that the second I saw her walking away from the detention level. The look on her face said enough.

Something terrible was coming.

I stopped outside the containment room and took a slow breath. Then another. My hands were steady. My expression was steady.

The rest of me felt like it was unraveling. I wasn't supposed to be here.

Fury's order had been crystal clear.

Stay away from Loki.

But after hearing Thor talk about Sigyn, I needed answers. I needed to hear Loki's side for myself. Before I could convince myself otherwise, I opened the door and stepped inside.

The room was silent. At least until Loki saw me.

A smile immediately touched his face. "Hello, my love."

My pulse spiked.

I hated that it happened every time. Hated that my body reacted before my brain could remind it who he really was.

Folding my arms across my chest, I forced myself to hold his gaze. "I came for answers."

Loki's eyes swept over me. Slowly. Deliberately.

I felt exposed despite the tactical suit covering every inch of me.

"You should have kept the gown," he said with a chuckle. "You were absolutely ravishing."

There it was again. The flirting. The attention. The way he acted as though we already belonged to each other.

"Answer the questions," I snapped, attempting to sound professional.

His grin widened. "Which ones?"

"Why did you abduct me from New Mexico?" I asked. "And why are you so obsessed with me?"

For the first time, his expression softened.

Not much.

Just enough.

"You remind me of someone."

My stomach tightened. "Who?"

"Someone who was important to me." His green eyes locked onto mine. "Someone I loved."

The room suddenly felt smaller. Thor had been telling the truth.

I swallowed. "Fine. That's one answer." I took another breath and pressed forward. "What about the affection?"

The softness vanished. The amusement returned.

Loki stepped closer to the glass. "So impatient."

"Answer me," I said.

He placed a hand against the transparent wall between us. "Because you're mine, Casey."

A chill crawled down my spine. "No."

"Oh, yes." The certainty in his voice was terrifying. "You have always been mine."

My heartbeat hammered harder.
