-Grohl: March 2019-
The music stopped playing and I walked over to turn the record over and started playing the B side. It had taken some time to patch things up after that. Nate had stayed but Pat had really turned the back on me. He never told anyone about the real reason he was leaving, not even Nate, and to the press he kept saying he was just tired of the whole thing. Taylor joined the band and Nate finally agreed - yes he was a great drummer and yes he was what the band needed. I was relieved that I had won Nate over and him and Taylor came along really well.
Me on the other hand was totally denying everything that Pat had said that night. I was determined to keep denying it, to Pat and to everyone else. Including myself...-1997-
A couple of weeks after Pat decided to leave the band my mum came to visit. I was going out on tour soon and wouldn't see her for months. So we'd decided that she should visit me this weekend. After picking her up from the airport and making sure she was settled in the guest room we went out to grab something to eat. We'd just sat down at a table outside this diner we both liked when I heard a familiar voice.
"Dave"
I looked round and saw Taylor walking towards our table. He pulled his half-long blonde hair away from his face and smiled a big cheeky smile. Suddenly I felt nervous. I hadn't planned for Taylor to meet my mother at all.
"Taylor, hi!" I said, my voice shaking a bit. I could feel my mum's eyes on me. "What are you doing here?"
"I was just going to get my bike fixed actually." he said "But then I saw your pretty face and decided to come and say hi"
I felt myself blush. I blushed even more than usual because I knew my mother was looking at me.
Taylor turned to my mother and smiled. "Hi I'm Taylor. I'm the new drummer in Dave's band" he said with his usual grin and stretched out his hand towards my mum.
"Taylor. Hello. Pleasure to meet you" she said and took his hand.
"This is Virginia. My mother." I said to introduce her.
"Your mother? That's hard to believe. She's way too beautiful to be your mother" Taylor said and gave my mum a wink.
She laughed. "Oh you're sweet Taylor. And you must be a great drummer if my David approves of you. He's very picky with the rhythm section in his band. Always been a perfectionist, ever since he was a child that one."
"Mum..." I moaned a bit embarrassed.
"I'm an ok drummer" Taylor said "Nowhere near up to Dave's standard. He's a fucking star! Never heard anyone hit the skins like he does."
He looked deep into my eyes when he said that. His hazel eyes, staring right into mine and my heart skipped a beat.
"David has always drummed on things ever since he was a child. He taught himself to play on the pillows of his bed" Virginia said. Then she turned to me "David, why don't you invite this lovely young man to eat lunch with us? Where are your manners my dear son?"
I really didn't want to dine with both Taylor and my mum. There was no one on this planet that knew me better than my mother. And I knew that whatever I was trying to hide from everyone else, including myself, I couldn't hide from her. But there was no way out of this now. I turned to Taylor and his eyes met mine once again. In the sun his eyes sparkled and looked like gold. "Do you want to join us Taylor?" I asked. I tried to sound casual and hide my nerves, but I am sure my mum picked up on it.
"I just had lunch...." he said and I relaxed a bit "...But I'd love to sit down and have a drink if you're sure you don't mind"
"Oh how lovely" Virginia said.
