-1998-
"The drums really do sound like shit!" Taylor exclaimed, plonked himself down on the chair and ran his hands through his hair.
We were recording our next album at my house in Virginia. After living in LA I wanted to get away from the big city life to record this album. I believe the location of the studio influences the sound of the music and this was the first album for us as a trio, me, Nate and Taylor. We needed something new, a fresh start. So I bought a house and build a studio in the basement. The three of us lived there too. The house was big and we all had separate rooms in different places of the house. Me and Taylor had our rooms on the second floor while Nate had his room downstairs. Sneaking behind Nate's back without him realising that me and Taylor were a thing was hard work. But we weren't ready to face the world just yet. We wanted to explore this just the two of us. Sneaking around made it more thrilling but still a part of me just wanted to show him to the world.
So far the recording was going alright. But there was something wrong with the sound of the drums on this track. We must've placed the microphones wrong in the room somehow. The snare was flat and the sound was just unbalanced. A whole days work and we had to do it all over again. It would mean a delay in our schedule for the album too.
"What should we do?" Nate asked
I could feel that he sensed the depressed mood in the room. Both me and Taylor were irritated because we had placed the microphones wrongly in the first place.
"Yeah... maybe we just should stay late and check over all the microphones to find which ones we have to change..." I said slowly, knowing I was suggesting a night's work.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah" Taylor said "Then we can hit record tomorrow morning."
"Won't lose more than a day then..." I said
There was a slight pause where a silence spread in the room. I really disliked it when the plan didn't work out. But I was also a perfectionist, and you can't have the former drummer of Nirvana having crap sounding drums can you?
"Uhm... I kinda have dinner plans tonight guys...." Nate said slowly.
Me and Taylor turned to look at Nate, who blushed so he matched his ginger hair.
"Are you going on a date Natey?!" Taylor said with a huge cheeky grin and gave his shoulder a friendly shove.
"Well as a matter of fact I am!" he said, his cheeks still pink.
"Good for you man!" I said "Who is she?"
"Just a girl I met at the coffee shop the other day. She gave me her number and we have dinner reservations for tonight. I kinda don't want to miss that."
"No one wants to miss a chance of getting laid!" Taylor said with a laugh winking at Nate.
"Ah come on! It's our first date man, I'm not like that and you know it...."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know. Just teasing you man." Taylor said.
"Talking about getting laid, you haven't got any for a long time. Must be driving you crazy!" Nate said with a laugh.
In my chair I felt myself tense and start to blush. Nate had noticed the absence of girls in Taylor's room.
"What do you know about that?!" Taylor said and leaned forward in his chair.
"Don't know... I just haven't seen any girls around, that's all.... Have you heard anything from his room Dave? I mean, you're on the same floor as him" Nate said and turned to me.
Now I really blushed. I looked over to the PA system and started turning some of the knobs. They didn't really do anything I just wanted to avoid eye contact with Nate.
