Chapter 21
Last Day of school
The golden rays of the morning sunshine were the last thing I'd thought I would see after the Final Exam. It all seemed like such a blur now but when I stood up against Robin I didn't expect to walk away with my life...nor Jace by my side. I woke up alone in my room, the blinds thrown wide open and the date circled on my calendar on my side table. 'Last Day of School' was circled in black ink and smiled when I remembered the first day of school when I drew that in...I couldn't wait to go home but now that I had the chance to I never wanted to leave. Slowly I got up out of bed, still sore from fighting with Robin and I dragged myself into the bathroom without looking at my reflection in the mirror.
I showered quickly and grabbed my dress and shoes, taking comfort in the soft purple material as the sun continued to shine through my bedroom window. I quickly checked myself once more in the full length mirror, making sure my curls and dress were in order and once I was satisfied I left my dorm and made my way downstairs. I took my time walking to the quad as I tried to savour my last moments inside the school. I closed my eyes as I walked, imagining those times with Jace between classes behind pillars and the cloud of invisibility as he held me in his arms and I smiled as I remembered all the great times with Georgina as we became friends...god I was going to miss it. I stepped through the double doors into the bright sunshine to see all of my fellow class mates talking with teachers and parents. I scanned the crowd looking for the one person who I knew wouldn't be standing with their mother or father until I found him beneath our blossom tree, the breeze tousling his hair and blowing the pink blossoms around him. His eyes were glazed over, staring at nothing on the horizon and I couldn't make out the expression on his face nor from his body language but it didn't take a genius to figure out that his brother's death had hit him hard...no matter how much of a bastard he was. I walked up to him and snaked my arms around his waist hugging him tightly to me.
"Are you alright?" I asked and I could feel him sigh deeply but he still failed to relax. He turned around in my arms and stroked my cheek, the fire inside of him warm to my skin.
"I am now that you're here." he spoke quietly and then gently pressed his lips to my head. He was trying so hard to stay strong but his words lacked his usual confidence and I wanted to desperately change the subject to get even just a small smile. I started tugging on his hand and pulled him away from the tree.
"Come on I want you to meet my parents." I smiled at him evilly but to no response; he just followed slowly behind me. I glanced around the crowded courtyard for my parents when I saw them standing near a table of food - so typical of my father to find the nearest source of food and stay there for the rest of the night. I tugged Jace with me towards my parents, weaving in between the mass of people.
"Hey mum, dad." I said with a big smile and I gave them both a hug.
"Hey honey we missed you so much." my mum said, holding me tight.
"I missed you guys heaps too." I let go of my mum and stepped back next to Jace, holding his hand in mine and I took a deep breath for the next part, "Mum, Dad; I would like you to meet my...uh boyfriend, Jace Snyder."
My father had begun to extend his hand toward Jace and the minute I said his last name his hand froze. But because my dad is awesome he kept extending his hand toward Jace and when Jace firmly gripped my father's hand I let out a sigh of relief.
"Nice to meet you. I hope you have been taking care of my Melanie for me while she has been here." My dad asked while staring Jace down, but Jace met my dad's heavy look with his own calm, steady expression and regained that old confident charm I had fallen in love with.
