“Um, wake up.” I said awkwardly, standing above Haven’s bed. How did she sleep for so long? Or more importantly, how the hell were you supposed to wake up a teenage girl? The comforter fell of Haven as she rolled over, and I silently thanked God that she was wearing modest pajamas. I don’t think I could handle her in a skimpy night dress, I felt awkward enough around her as it is.
She didn’t seem like she was going to fall back asleep, so I deemed it safe to leave the room. I took a seat on the couch, and only had to wait a couple of seconds before Haven walked in. She was still wearing the short and baggy t-shirt that she used as pajamas, and immediately walked to the coffee pot.
“Where are the other guys?” she asked, when she finally noticed that we were the only ones in the apartment.
“They went out to get more blood.”
“Didn’t you guys just go hunting yesterday?” she questioned and I nodded.
“We need a supply of blood to keep here, so we won’t have to go hunting next week. They went to a blood blank outside New York City.” Haven scrunched up her nose when I said that, I don’t think she like the idea of keeping blood in the dorm. But it didn’t matter what she thought; it was necessary. Haven studied me. Although I pretended not to notice, I still felt myself get self conscious. What was wrong with me? No girl has ever done this to me, especially no human girl. When I looked up, I realized she was now focused on making her coffee, and I breathed a silent sigh of relief.
“So I’m stuck with you today?” she asked, but she said it with a small smile. She sat down on the couch next to me, trying hard not to spill her coffee.
“I guess so. At least for this morning.” I said, smiling back. I felt weird; I was not supposed to like her. Why was that again…? Oh, right. She put me and my brothers in danger by being here and knowing our secret. But still, I almost felt glad that she had come to live with us. “What do you want to do today?”
“Hmm does this school have a decent weight room?” she asked, and I smiled to myself. That was my favorite place to go.
“State-of-the-art.” I replied, and she smiled too.
“Awesome. I’m going to go get changed and then we can go work out. I need to work off all this food I’ve been eating here.” She laughed before getting up and walking into the room. I shook my head to myself. That girl did not need to lose any weight at all. She was beautiful just the way she was. It took me a second to process that thought. That was not okay. I couldn’t feel that way about Haven, and I definitely shouldn’t. Not only were we different species, I was pretty damn sure that Ryan had a thing for her.
When she walked out of the room I was surprised that my mouth didn’t drop open. She wore only a sports bra and shorts, and her hair was pulled up into a pony tail. Oh, God. If this girl only knew the things she did to me.
“Let’s go.” I said quickly, turning on my heel and quickly walking toward the door. She followed me silently all the way to the gym, and we got there she stood at the door in awe.
“Oh wow, this place is huge!” she exclaimed.
“Come on.” I lead her past all the other work out machines, until we reached the treadmills. “Best way to start a work out.” I informed her, but I got the feeling she already knew that.
We got on two tread mills that were right next to each other and started to set our machines. Haven set hers at a pretty high speed, especially for a human. She looked at me in surprise as I set mine to the fastest pace. I was glad this area was secluded.
After a couple of hours of working out, we were both ready to go back to the dorm. I was amazed at how fast time seemed to pass when I was with Haven. The part of me that I was trying so hard to ignore, wished that it would last longer. We walked the one fourth of a mile back to the dorms, both exhausted.
I let her take a shower first. While I was waiting I sat on the couch and flipped on the TV, settling on The Simpsons. I shot up as the door slammed open.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, as Danny, Ryan and Damian walked into the room. I tried not to show the surprise I felt at seeing the last person with them.
“Remember the claw marks that we found on Haven’s back?” Ryan asked.
“Of course.” How could I ever forget?
“We found similar ones on a tree outside, and they looked fresh.” Danny informed me. “We need you to come look around with us. Your strength and your speed might make the difference in catching this thing.”
I nodded, I was just as excited to exact my revenge on this things as everybody else was. I was about to walk out the door when I remembered something.
“Wait I can’t leave, what about Haven?”
“That’s why I’m here.” Damian said, a smug smile on his face.
