Hey!

Don't leave, this is a chapter! Well, a chapter preview.

I just wanted to say that I'm sorry it took so long to get out! I just got my keyboard so now I can type the chapters, which should go by faster. Please please please point out any typos you see. I haven't gotten used to this keyboard yet.

Enjoy!

Amaris' POV (not edited)

—————
My feet catch on what I assume is a tree root, and I stumble. The bag over my head prevents me from seeing. Despite my efforts to be calm, my breathing is heavy. My arms ache from where the tallest man grabs me. I am clearly terrified, but not because of the man shoving a gun at my back, or of the other one who reeks too much to be in human form.

My body hurts. My skin is bruised. My heart is pounding in fear. These are human things, things I don't experience, because I am not human.

So why is this happening?

I am pulled from my thoughts when my foot catches on something again, but this time it's different from the sticks and rocks. I feel my foot connect with it, and it moves. It lands with a plop and I knew what it was.

The box with the bomb. Well, the fake bomb.

Then where was Jessi? Had she already learned that the bomb was a fake and gone to get me? Did she find Evan, lying unconscious in the dirt? She would've mindlinked Rhylan alrea-

Oh, Rhylan. And the rogues. Is she hurt? Is she even alive?

I felt my heart rate increase by an extreme amount. My breathing was hard and fast, cut short by little gasps that escaped my throat.

I can't breathe. I can't breathe! What is this?

"-Up. Shut up! Be quiet before you bring those bastards here." The man holding my arm gripped it tighter, cutting off any blood flow I would've had as a human. Am I human now?

I couldn't think of an answer to that question, not when I could feel a strong dizziness taking over my body. My legs felt like noodles, my lungs burn, my arms feel like lead, and my whole body is heavy. And I was panicking. I didn't even have a mindlink with her to ask her if she was okay.

Or let her know that I am being kidnapped.

I let my weight drop. It is so sudden that the tall man almost drops me, but he recovers in enough time to haul me back up. "Walk," he says in his thick accent. "Walk on yer own damn legs. I ain't got all day." He pulls me along, my feet dragging against the ground. He walks too fast for me to catch up, and his grip on my arm distracts me from my panic.

Is this what pain feels like?

Suddenly, he drops me on the ground. My chin bangs on a rock, and I yank my arms forward to catch the blood dripping down my skin. I use the bag and wipe it off. I can't let them see the color of my blood.

The bag is ripped away from my hands, and I close my eyes to block the light of the sun. Except, there is no bright sun beating down on my face. The sun is going down, and I haven't decided if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I open my eyes and they adjust immediately. My eyesight is sharp, and I can tell that they have taken me to the edge of Rhylan's territory. I feel the hum of the barrier I set up a mile away. Good, I'm not entirely human.

In front of me are four people, one of them in wolf form. One girl, three boys. The men stare at me and the wolf drools. The girl ignores me entirely, focusing on her phone. Her voice flutters in and out of my ear, and that's when I realize that my body is shutting down. I slump against the floor, too exhausted to hold my body up. I instead focus my attention on the girl.

"Yes Fa-... She didn't even fight. No, the al-... That wasn't the deal! I ge-... The girl, and you give me the fi-... Fine. Same location. Don't be late." She ends the call with a click, slipping the phone into her back pocket. I file that away for late. Back pocket, left side.

"Alrighty, let's get going. Up you go, princess." She gestured to the man behind me, and he grabbed my arm. I let my eyes flutter close and heard the man curse under his breath.

"She's out cold, Boss." He said.

I heard it before I felt it. A skinny hand coming down on my face. I forced myself not to react.

"Hm. Carry her, then. We'll move faster anyway. Let's get a move on. Mindlink groups two and three to retreat. Let the rest fight."

"Til when, boss?"

"Til they die, of course."

Mindlink. Mindlink!

'Vizen? Vizen!'

'Amaris?! Oh my goddess, where are you?! Rhylan said you were missing, she made the trackers leave the fight and they're all looking for you and Rhylan had Evan arrested and Jedd and Josiah are looking EVERYWHERE for you where are you-'

'Vizen I don't have time for this, I'm going to pass out. They took me to the edge of the territory, the same way as the box, three boys one girl.'

The rev of an engine cuts me off, and I feel my body being shoved in a car.

'They put me in a car. I don't know where I'm going, but I'm scared Vizen! Please get Rhylan! Tell her I-"

Before I get to finish, I feel the mindlink cut off. We've exited the territory.

The last thing I hear is the dark laugh of the girl bubble from her throat. I let myself black out.
