Rhylan's POV
Papers covered every surface in my office, though I'm not certain where they came from. There was a constant chatter that lulled into the background. Every once in a while, I would pick up pieces of a conversation, but they bounced in and out of my head faster than I could grasp them."-but you can't-"
"-try somehow-"
"-were to find-"
"-I just want-"
"-Alpha-"
I tune them out, turning towards the window. The sun is starting to set, though it feels as if I have just woken up. I watch as people walk back and forth across the courtyard, carrying baskets of clothes or food. Some of them stop to chat, nodding along to words I can't hear. I imagine if I right in front of them, I still wouldn't.
"Rhylan." I hear then, behind me. I turn back towards the room, taking in all of the faces looking back at me. Almost half a dozen alphas stood around the room, along with a few of their betas. The testosterone in this building is high, stuffing up the room, so I face the window again and open it.
"Rhylan, we need to know more about this plan you have." Alpha Jon says to my right. I face them again and sigh, before picking up the office phone. I dial the number to the phone I got Vizen this morning. It rings twice, two very long, awkward silences as we all eye each other. Some of the alphas sit with their chests puffed, uncomfortable with the test of authority in the room, but I don't bother. I couldn't care less who the strongest alpha was, in the long run. Especially not now, not during a time like this.
"Hello?" Vizen calls over the phone. She's in her room upstairs, most likely, but using a pack link opens up a sort of 'room' in the mind, where thoughts flow freely. I'd rather keep my thoughts to myself, considering many of them were doubting that my crazy ass plan would work.
"I need you in my office," I say lowly, before hanging up. Jackson sits on the couch across the room, scowling heavily. I assume Vizen talked to him already, because despite being livid, he isn't surprised in the slightest. I want to reassure him, to explain that I would walk in there myself if it wouldn't immediately raise all types of red flags. They know my face, all of them do, I'm sure of it. It was risky, taking Vizen out to that human city, but it was far enough away, I hope.
I cross my arms over my chest as the door to my office is pushed open. Vizen and I are passed the point of knocking. She waves at the room of alphas, slightly stunned, and makes her way over to me.
"Alphas, this is Vizen. She is Amaris' sister, and my beta's mate. She is also the key to our plan." I say loudly.
"And how exactly is she going to help?" Someone asks, a neighboring alpha to the left of Jon. He doesn't say it in a demeaning way, I note, just curious.
"Any questions you have about Vizen can be answered by her," I gesture to Vizen, who makes herself comfortable in my desk chair. I roll my eyes and turn back to the window. There she is again!
"I'm going undercover," Vizen says, sitting straight up.
Amaris stands on the edge of the forest, hair dancing in the breeze. She doesn't smile, or even look my way, but she's so beautiful. My breath hitches, heart aching. She begins to walk away, and I stop myself from reaching out. 'She's not there,' I think. 'She's gone.'
