For a split second

For a split second...everything went dark, as I closed my eyes, drowning out the panic screams that filled my ears. My breathing was shaky and all I could think about were my kids, who were just right upstairs, not knowing the drama that just unfolded right under their little feet.

"Destiny? Destiny! Baby, please open your eyes!" Christian begged, his voice sounding like an echo. I slowly opened my eyes, looking up to see Christian and my parents standing over me. "Oh thank God, you're alright." Was I really though? I had a stinging pain in my head, as if somebody knocked me upside my head with a baseball bat, as I reached up and placed my hand on my head.

"Careful baby. You're bleeding." My mom said, as tears poured down her face. "Baby, go grab a towel and some ice!"

"An ambulance is on the way!" I heard Grace say, as I turned my head slightly, noticing a body laying next to me. I gasped and sat up, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head, as I stared at the body.

"Wes?" I spoke, as the tears filled my eyes. I didn't have to see his face to know that it was Wes who was lying next to me, which sent me into a hysterical episode. "Wes! No, no, no...get up, Wes! Please, get up!" As if I had entered a flashback scene, I remember standing there with a gun being pointed at me, but as soon as Elena pulled the trigger...I felt someone push me out of the way before I completely blacked out.

"Destiny...baby, I need you to calm down." My mom said, as I continued crying and screaming. Wes took a bullet for me today, and if he dies...I'll never forgive myself.

"Baby, come here." I heard Christian say, and in that moment...I snapped.

"Don't you fucking touch me! This is all your fault!" I shouted, shoving him away from me.

"Destiny, stop!" My mom wrapped her arms around me, holding me while I struggled to get out of her hold. "Calm down and breathe, okay? In through your nose and out through your mouth." She kept repeating the same thing, telling me to inhale through my nose and exhale out of my mouth. Eventually I calmed down, but that didn't mean I wasn't any less angry. I laid with Wes until the ambulance came and got him, before my parents insisted that I go to the hospital as well to get checked out. I agreed, only because I wanted to be there with Wes, but I also wanted to make sure that the baby was okay.

On the car ride to the hospital, I called Detective Clark and asked him about Jack Hyde. To my surprise, he told me that Jack had escaped police custody, which he had told my husband the day after it happened; who told him not to tell me because he wanted to do it himself. My anger turned into a dangerous fury and I couldn't even calm down even if I wanted to.

When we arrived at the hospital, they already had a room waiting for me, since Christian called and told them that his pregnant wife was attacked. He decided to stay back home and do some damage control, while my parents took me to the hospital, but I feel like he didn't want to come because he knew I was going to let his ass have it the second we're alone.
