Chapter 7
Ross-
My phone vibrates and lights up, waking me up, so I’m going to assume I fell asleep last night, and the caller ID reads ‘LAPD.’
I immediately answer, “Hello?”
“Is this Ross Lynch?” A man’s voice asks on the other end. “Yes, this is he.”
“Your daughter, Annabelle, is here at the police station with me, and she told me to call this number,” he explains. “Can I talk to her?” There’s a pause. “Here she is.”
“Dad!” Annabelle explains from the other end. “Is Mom okay? Are you?” I sigh slightly. “Yeah, I am. But I don’t know about Mom yet, we have to wait and see.” There’s silence. “Oh, okay. Is Carter there with you?”
“Not yet,” I reply. “He will be though; he’s heading here with your uncles, aunt, Ariel, and Grandpa.”
“Good,” she replies quietly. “The policeman is going to bring me there, okay? I love you, Dad.” I take in a breath, then let it out. “Love you too, Belle. We’re in room 314. See you.”
We hang up, and I can’t help but look at Ashley again.
‘Riker: Hey. We’re on our way. See you soon’
I reply,
‘Hey bro. Ok, thanks for letting me know. See you’
I slip my phone into one of the small pockets of my backpack that’s leaning up against the hospital chair I was sitting in.
“Ross, hun, are they landed yet?” Mom asks me softly, and I nod. “Yeah, they’ll be here soon.”
She nods, and I look back at Ashley, my thumb tracing soft patterns on the top of her hand. I need her to make it. I need her to pull through and stay here. With the kids. With Mom and Dad. Everyone. Me.
“Dad?” I hear a quiet voice at the door, and I turn and see Annabelle, and Mom immediately wraps her small body in her arms. After their embrace, Belle walks over, standing next to me, staring at Ashley, just like I was. “Will Mom make it?”
“If you believe she will.” I say softly, my arms finding their way around her, and her small arms wrap around my neck, her nose nuzzled in my chest. I couldn’t help but think of how Ashley always does that whenever we hug. I blink the tears away just as Dad, Rocky, Riker, Ryland, Rydel, Ellington, Carter, and Ariel walk into Ashley’s room, Carter immediately finding his way over to me.
“Mom,” he breathes, walking around the chair I’m sitting in, standing next to Ash’s bed. “Mom, please. Say something.”
The room stays mostly silent, besides the few words exchanged between Mom and Dad every once and awhile.
“Anyone want anything from the cafeteria?” Mom asks, breaking the silence. Everyone tells her what they want, and she walks toward me. “I think I should get you some water, hun. You’re looking pale.” I nod, and she walks out of the room.
I take Ashley’s hand in mine again, when I feel her fingers move under mine. My eyes widen, and I stand, grabbing my backpack, and everyone stares at me.
“S-she moved,” I breathe. “Her fingers moved! Grab a nurse!”
Rocky runs out, bringing back a nurse almost immediately, and he asks us to clear the way, so we all stand on the side of the room where I was standing, Carter and Annabelle on each side of me, everyone else around me.
“EVERYONE CLEAR A PATH! STRETCHER COMING DOWN THE HALL!” I hear the nurse call out.
“I need to stay with her!” I exclaim, starting out, but Riker grips my arms in his hands. “Ross, stay here. They’ll be back with the verdict soon.” I protest, “No! I need to go, Riker!”
“Dad,” Carter whispers. “Please, stay here. I need you to.” I nod, walking over, pulling him into a hug, along with Annabelle, and we just stand there in our embrace.
“Mr. Lynch?” I whirl around, and the nurse’s eyes land on me. “Your wife – Ashley – has woken up. But, she’ll have to stay in crucial care until she’s completely okay.”
“Can we see her?” I ask. “I suppose. But only for a little bit; visiting hours are almost over for this morning.”
We all follow the nurse to Ashley’s new room in ‘crucial care,’ room 103, and I see her brown eyes open.
“Ash!” I run over to her bedside, grabbing her hand in mine.
“Hi Ross,” she smiles slightly. “How long was I out for?”
“A night and a bit,” I reply. “You’re okay. I’m so glad you’re okay.” I lean down, outing my backpack down, my arms finding Ashley’s waist, hugging her, and I take a deep breath in of her perfume.
“Ross, she’s awake?!” Mom runs in, dropping all the food into Dad’s arms, running over to the other side Ashley’s bed, and I pull away from our embrace softly, letting Mom hug her and everyone else.
“You okay?” Rocky comes to stand beside me as I stand and stare at everyone hugging and greeting Ashley. “O-oh, yeah,” I say. “Why?”
“It looked like you were upset still,” he shrugs. “I dunno, sorry. But I’m glad Ash is okay.” I smile slightly. “Yeah, me too.”
I feel a pair of eyes on me, and realize it’s Ashley’s, and I think everyone else does too, because Rocky whispers in my ear, “We’ll take the kids with us. We’ll let you two have some time.”
After everyone leaves, I walk toward Ashley’s bed again.
“I thought you wouldn’t make it,” I whisper, our eyes locked as I lean in, my hands cupping her face, also locking our lips in a soft kiss. “I love you. So much.” I whisper in between kisses, and I finally pull away gently, both of us catching our breathes, our eyes still locked.
“I love you too,” she smiles. “How’d you get here? Did Belle call you?” I nod. “Yeah, and I flew over right away with Mom. Then everyone else came this morning before you woke up. We were all so worried, mostly me though.” She chuckles. “I didn’t expect to hear anything less.”
Ashley-
I lean up, kissing Ross’ cheek softly, then laying back on my pillow. I start to see tears slowly streaming down Ross’ cheeks, and I act fast to wipe them away.
“Hey, hey,” I say softly. “What’s wrong?” He sniffs. “I’m just so happy you’re alright. At one point before you woke, I thought you’d never come back to us.”
“Oh, no,” I whisper. “I’d never leave all of you. I promise, especially you.”
