I can't believe Luna convinced me to get a tattoo of an avocado on my wrist.
I stared hard at it, squeezing my wrist with my fingers, holding it close to my face. "I can't believe you convinced me to get a tattoo of an avocado on my wrist."
"I know, this is freaking amazing. I love you." Luna threw her arm around me as we walked, holding her wrist up in front of us. Now she had a beautiful feather on her left arm and a random avocado on her right wrist. "Just keep the film over it for a few days."
"I can't believe they have eyes. This avocado...has eyes, Luna."
"They're small dots, no one can see them unless they look super close."
"And arms? And legs? Stick feet?"
"Oh shush, you and I both love guac more than our own skin, and this is cute."
My wrist throbbed and my skin burned but honestly, it wasn't the worst pain I'd ever experienced.
"Well, at least I got the pit," I said, looking away from my bandaged wrist and up at the sunset. We were almost back on campus; crickets chirped and warm air washed over me. "I shouldn't have, though, considering I'm hollow now with the absence of my heart."
Luna lightly smacked my arm. "You're not hollow. Fill yourself with these moments." She spread her arms out wide. "Or fill yourself other ways...literally..." She made some gestures I would not won't put into words, but I understood what "other ways" she spoke of.
These moments definitely helped, and I was so grateful for them. And Luna. And Mom. I was able to forget about Arrow (sorta).
Yet now we were back at the dorms.
Oh no. I hadn't been back here all morning; the last thing he said to me was "I'll be in the dorms if you need me."
What would I say? I was just rejected by my own freaking creation and I couldn't muster up any words that would change his mind.
"What do I say to him?" I said suddenly. The building came into view and I stopped. I couldn't go in there.
"To who?" Luna looked back at me, then around us like someone was there.
"Arrow." I put a hand to my chest. "He told me he doesn't love me and I made myself look like an idiot."
"Okay? Well tell him he's a fucking asshole."
"No, no." I inhaled, exhaled, inhaaaaled, exhaaaaled. "It's okay. Maybe he doesn't know how to communicate."
"Yeah, neither does half this generation. He's an asshole for leaving you in the library after sharing the tragic news."
"Yeah, but-"
"Frannie, stop. You sound ridiculous. Stop making excuses for people. Doesn't matter if he's your basement project, he's a guy. He's clueless and inconsiderate."
Maybe she was right. He said he was attracted to my light-attracted. So he only felt physically attracted to me. I just needed to get this over with.
So...we stepped inside.
My stomach churned as we made our way through the lobby, to the elevator, and up to the second floor. What do I say? What will he say? What if he hated me now?
One foot in front of the other...
"You're driving me insane." Luna took out her key card and held it in front of the door. "This is our dorm. He should be scared for you to come home, not the other way around."
