"Luna, we need to go."
I found her on someone's lap on a leather couch against a wall. She'd found a quieter part of the warehouse slightly hidden behind some giant plants and a pool table. Her hair shielded her face as she made out with someone who had his hands right on her butt. Unlike freshman year, I wasn't leaving.
"Luna! We need to go!" I shouted.
She finally pulled away and looked up at me.
The guy she kissed wasn't anyone I recognized: he wore a black beanie and had a little stubble on his jaw, as well as a tattoo of tic-tac-toe on his neck. He smiled drunkenly at Luna and didn't seem to notice me. Instead, he turned her face away from me and started kissing her again.
"Luna!" I reached for her arm and yanked her off the guy. He didn't fight me and neither did she; instead, she stumbled a little bit to get her bearings before flipping her messy hair off her face to make eye contact with me.
"Woah, sorry. Isn't he cute?"
"You don't even know him! We have-"
"Wait, where's Arrow?" She glanced around breathlessly.
"I don't know. We have to go. This night is trash."
"Oh...Frannie honey, what's wrong?" She held my face between her cold hands and ran her thumbs beneath my eyes. "You're crying." She smelled like whiskey and weed. Luna didn't smoke, but this dude she was kissing reeked of weed. Unless...she had smoked with him? He probably didn't give a crap about her like Tyrell did, yet she chose this guy. What happened to her only having a drink?
"I'm not, I'm fine. But we have to go. Can I have your keys?"
"Aw, c'mon," the dude on the couch said, resting his elbows on his knees. He reached for Luna's leg and tugged on her pants. "Come back, baby."
"Who's this?" I pulled out of Luna's grasp. "Where's Tyrell?"
"Tyrell?" the guy mumbled. He seemed more high than drunk, but suddenly he straightened his posture and glanced around.
"I dunno." Luna crossed her arms. "Last I checked, he was watching me lick Marcus's neck."
"What? Why? You were just with Tyrell."
"Yeah, well I'm proving to him that he means absolutely nothing to me."
I was still fuming about Arrow, but that stopped me suddenly. "By kissing a stranger?"
She sounded just like Arrow.
"We danced, I lured him in. I mean, I considered hooking up if there weren't any feelings, but he got all sentimental on the dance floor and told me he still likes me and I...I liked that he said that and it felt weird and unfamiliar...so I texted Marcus from Art to meet me so we could have sex and Tyrell watched me kiss Marcus and he left-left! What a dick."
There were few moments that put Luna in a light I didn't want to see her in. This was one of those moments. I knew she wasn't proud of it either; that's what she'd told me the day she mentioned her parents being disappointed in her. I just didn't understand. Maybe I'd never understand her perspective on guys like she'd never understand mine.
"Why would you do that to him?" I said. "Why even dance with him if you planned to embarrass him like that?"
"Because I only wanted to hook up with him! It's his fault he caught feelings."
"Luna...no..."
"He'll get over it."
"Get over it? Luna, he likes you and you're playing with his emotions."
