I knocked at exactly eight pm.
Why did my heart hammer at the thought of studying? We did this so many times before.
"That was fast," Isaac said, pulling the door open.
"So what did you decide?" I wasted no time as I hurried into his dorm and spun around. I glanced around briefly in case Phil still loitered, but it looked like we were alone: the counters were spotless, the floors neatly swept, and all the lights aside from the kitchen light off, and...the table adorned with flowers, wine glasses, and sticky notes.
"Damn, you're in a hurry." Isaac shut the door and joined me in the kitchen. As he approached, I noticed his eyes drop down from my pink tank top to my gray sweatpants to the peach slippers I stole out of our closet from Luna since my last ones got damaged in the Wacky Lab flood.
"Time is precious," I defended.
"The gray sweats are cute," he said. "You look good in them."
My cheeks flushed as I looked back at him. "Thanks. Um...what's this?" I gestured at the table awkwardly, my backpack tugging at my shoulder.
"A table. Sticky notes. Wine glasses. Or do you mean the pencil?"
"I mean why is it set up like this?" Was this...a date?
"Because we're sitting at the table to study. What, would you prefer the couch?"
"No, I just..." Did I want this to be a date?
My heart beat faster at the thought of it. I pushed away the thoughts, but they wormed their way to the front of my brain: he set up flowers...and wine glasses...and sticky notes...how sweet...for studying? He said I was in charge of this night...
Honestly, that was adorable.
"Isaac, this is so cute." It wasn't a date. Studying, right? Get the idea out of your head. I couldn't have any distractions, I had a mission and goals, not just with Arrow, but with cleaning up my final report card.
But... "Is this...a date?"
"A date?" His eyebrows shot up. "You really think this would be a date?"
Stupid me, why'd I ask? "I mean...I'm sorry, my mind is still stuck on dating and love and-"
"I'd put a hell of a lot more effort into a date with you," he continued, laughing. "This is just studying. When I take you on a date, it'll be much more thoughtful than this."
"'When?'"
"Yeah, I mean...assuming you'll say yes."
Was I hearing right? "You're taking me on a date?"
He fought a smile. "Eventually. Right now, you need to focus on school."
I...didn't know what to say. When would this be? I mean...wait what?
My mind spun. Just the thought of it drowned out all other thoughts and oh gosh, this was a dangerous place to be. I cleared my throat. "Isaac, I need to know about Arrow. His time-"
Isaac dug in his pocket and pulled out a vial. He passed it to me. I took the vial and studied it carefully.
Isaac Marks. Age 22. Male.
"Oh my God. You got it. Already?" So he made up his mind a while ago.
"Only time I could get my blood drawn was Monday, which is why I wasn't in class. Patricia drew it for me. She's curious about what we're up to."
I looked up at him then. "Did you say anything?"
"I said you're experimenting again. And I'm your guinea pig."
