I know what you're thinking: things went Frankenstein to Dracula real quick.
But this wasn't like that. Arrow explained that in order to extend his life, in order to keep his heart pumping, it needed more blood. His blood cells weren't meant to reproduce like a normal human's; he'd need iron pills or whatever made his blood cells reproduce so his heart could pump enough blood through his body.
Arrow's heart was diseased. He had a faulty heart (but that couldn't have been prevented even if we tried) and though he looked perfect on the outside, on the inside, his body was rotting. It was slowly killing itself.
I researched more about silk moths and discovered they're very fragile creatures and are domesticated for a reason. Jostling silk moths too much can easily bruise or kill them. I know, right? Bugs can bruise, too. And they could get sick just from a person touching them with unclean hands.
Arrow's body became more fragile as time went on. What seemed beautiful-his Latin markings on his skin, his gray eyes lighting up, the darker hues around his hair, and even the scar on his cheek-were actually the bruises this life was leaving on him.
Like anyone who needed a blood transfusion, he needed blood from someone who had his exact blood type. Except with Arrow, he could only have blood from one specific person. That person, unfortunately, was Isaac.
"How much blood?" Isaac sat across from Luna and I in a booth at Soundful Cloud, his arms crossed on the table.
"Um...he didn't say."
"So his heart is bad?" Luna popped a fry into her mouth and looked between Isaac and I. She sat on my left, as usual, and Tyrell sat on her left. He stared at us like we all insane, though he listened in without freaking out. "What about a heart transplant?"
"Yeah, you're more than welcome to volunteer," Isaac deadpanned.
Luna froze just before popping another fry into her mouth and shot him the coldest stare. "I think my heart has to have some sort of feeling in order for it to work, hun. I'll give you an ice pick to see if you can try chiseling through it, though."
"It's probably not a lot," I said. "We only needed a drop when we brought him to life. This is probably only a few drops more." I hoped.
"Blood transfusions aren't unusual," Isaac added, "but Arrow is extremely unusual. What's the catch?"
Luna looked at me then. This time she didn't have anything smart to say because Isaac had a point: there was always a catch.
"He didn't say that, either." All he said was that he needed blood. I panicked at those words and got him off the Health Center so we could get him some food and air conditioning. But, "I'll get all the details once we're alone. It's not a binding contract, though. You can change your mind anytime, Isaac. Just know...this is Arrow's life we're talking about."
"I know...it's just...blood is a bind, Frannie. Why do you think blood is the sole factor that determines who's related to you? Or how to identify bodies in crime? Or search for criminals? Why do you think people have blood types? Why do we humans have to be careful with transmitting diseases to others through blood? And way back when, people signed contracts in blood. There's a reason for that. Blood is a bind, it's a strong variable in any situation, whether Arrow admits it or not."
"Damn bro," Tyrell said, nodding. "Blasting them with the facts." He looked at me expectantly. "You gonna counter that? He's got some valid points. Y'all ever read vampire books? Blood transforms, it feeds something. That shit's dangerous."
"But in a way, this makes you and Arrow related," Luna said as she chewed on a cherry stem from her shake. "I mean, not to sound air-headed, but that's kinda cool isn't it? This sorta makes you brothers. You must have some similarities in your thought-process."
