"You don't have to think about it." Neil whispered, taking her more close to him as if showcasing to some outsider that he was there to protect her.
Only if he would have realised that while protecting her, he turned her greatest villain. So much she hated him more than Vidyut.
And now, even when he is forgiven the burden of of making her suffer through a permanent damage was so heavy, he might collapse under it anytime.
There was a faint knock on the door. Avni broke free from her slumber somehow. There were 2 knocks in a succession. Then 3. "Ma!" Avni exclaimed. Maybe she didn't realise she was on a nasal cannula. It stopped her from doing that. As a result, she jumped a bit and was about to get up get but slumped back. Her eyes closed in pain as she clutched her clothing over her chest. "Hey. Stay put." Neil said gathering her in his arms.
In order to not be a rude recipient he called out gently for Neela Ma to come in, since the door was not locked.
Neil gestured her to stay quiet and cuddled Avni.
"Dard kyu ho raha hai?" Avni asked, hiding her face in his neck. "There was a muscle strain in your chest. So you need to rest, okay? Sleep." Neil lied, patted her head, gently rocked her and eventually, she appreciated his efforts by sleeping.

"Wasn't it your duty to tell me everything related to her? Why do you hide it?" Neil asked. He didn't want to be angry with the people who didn't have the capacity to change. Neela Ma was surely one of them.
"I'm sorry. I try to eliminate things that were cured. Are you going to tell her about it?" She asked.
"No. I can't. We...she was so happy about all this and all of a sudden....this...this shitty stuff going on. She can just not cope up with this. She might as well end up committing suicide, like she did. You know.." Neil said irritably. Hadn't he made it obvious enough.
"I don't. Tell me." The urgency and pang of anger in her voice made him look at her. Then he realised what she referred to. Deciding not to hide things anymore, he told her about how Avni hurt herself repeatedly as a teenager.
"ye ladki bhi na! Kitni pagal hai! And yeah, don't you think she'd very EASILY know that thing going on with her? Or do you-? No wait do you actually believe that she won't realise that she has that heavy thing all around her nose? ACP saab dimaag police station mei chodke aate ho?" Neela was irked by the suicide thingy.
"No. I know she'll very well know. I will try to postpone it."
"Like your confession to her?"
"You need to stop, okay? You're going too far now." Neil intervened. Neela could be provoking sometimes; but she knew, she always knew what lay ahead and how to tackle the situation, somehow. Perks of being a mother maybe?
There was awkwardness between them right now because of the tone in which they spoke to each other. "Do you know what she spoke in her sleep? She's going....too far and too fast."
It would be difficult to manage Avni given that she had adopted a mindset like that.
"Elaborate."
"She is feeling that she can never give me a normal happy family. She believes she's going to be the mother of an..an abnormal child. Be... because of her. That's so...I don't know how I'll make her get rid of that thought. And I'm not ready to embrace fatherhood, honestly. I'm fearing that if I say this to her, she might feel.. insecure."
Undesirable was the correct word.
"Why aren't you?" Neela asked, putting her gentle hand on his shoulder. Neil ran his fingers through his hair out of anger and irritation. He didn't like to entangle himself in these kind of situations which sucked the life out of him.
"Avni ko to kabhi khush rakh nahi paaya. Hamare bache ko kaise rakhunga? I'm not ready Neela Ma. Your words won't make my condition any better. I told you then as well." His eyes fell upon Avni who slept peacefully.
"I know you'll manage. See you." Neela left him to enjoy his own company.
Company of useless thoughts.
