Hermione's POV
"Ugh come on bookbag, you can last me another week." Hermione muttered to herself as she dragged along her already bulging bookbag and tried to fit in more books. Rip! About 12 thick and heavy books fell out and scattered in the corridor. Cursing under her breath, she bent to pick them all up as fast as possible so that she wouldn't be late for her next class.
Suddenly a whirlwind of blond hair and chiselled features caught her by surprise.
"Terribly sorry!" he bent down to help her pick them up, being the gentleman he was. Other girls would have begun to flirt with him immediately after seeing how handsome he was, but not Hermione. As Hermione caught a glimpse of his face, the cogs of her mind turned at an alarming speed, and she tried to hide the shock that was mirrored on her face "Since when has a Malfoy bothered to help me or apologise" she mocked him, crossing her arms across her chest with a look of contempt.
"Aha, well no one told me a pretty brunette walked these halls." he replied evenly, raising his head. As he did, Hermione realised he wasn't the Malfoy she was expecting. His nose wasn't as upturned and he had warm, dark brown eyes compared to the Malfoy she knew, who had cold, grey eyes.
"Who are you?!" she asked, after a few seconds, after coming up with the most logical conclusion she could. "Are you Malfoy's twin?... (after a few seconds she countered her first theory) No, that can't be possible because Malfoy doesn't have a twin!"
"Whoa slow down! Firstly, your guess is spot on, well sort of, I'm Virgo Malfoy, brother to Draco Malfoy. Pleased to meet you. And you are?" Flabbergasted, Hermione was still contemplating what to throw back as an answer. For a Malfoy, he sure had some amount of manners. Finally, an answer slipped out of her mouth, "Well, you sure have a little courtesy, unlike your brother. But I don't think I've ever heard a Malfoy talk or even mention you. By the way, I'm Hermione Granger, pleased to make your acquaintance." she (hopefully) said it smoothly.
With a twinkle in his eye and a slight nod of his head he explained, "Well, me and Draco only found out about each other a few months ago during the holidays. So well, um, I'm a year older than him. It's a long story, but anyway, now we know that the other exists and for me to complete my education and be with my little brother, I came here. But Draco did mention a certain student at the top of our class called Hermione Granger." At the mention of her name, Hermione turned pink with pleasure.
"Hey um, I kind of don't know my way around here so do you mind helping me to my next class?" Virgo added sheepishly, a blush creeping up his cheeks due to embarrassment at not knowing where to go and having to ask someone he just knocked down. Luckily, she managed to take him to charms and still be on time for transfiguration. Oh great! They were having it with the Slytherins. This would normally be a great annoyance to her, having to endure Draco Malfoy's incessant teasing and arrogance. However, in this lesson she would be able to ask him about his brother.
As always, professor Snape had it in for Hermione. "Ms Granger, you shall be making the confusion concoction with Mr Malfoy today." His voice dripped with amusement at the thought of putting her with the student she loathed the most. Grumbling, but knowing enough not to get hot headed over professor Snape, she curtly took her bag and without much grace, dumped it by her 'new' partner.
"Hey Granger, Scar Head and Weasel have probably taken a confusion concoction themselves. Clearly, they're lost." His mouth upturning into one of his familiar malicious smirks. Trying to distract herself from rising to the bait, Hermione instead questioned him about his brother. That soon wiped the annoying expression off his face. "Well, I heard you have a brother?" At this, Malfoy was at a loss for words. All the blood drained out of his normally pale face. "How- I – no one knew!" he stuttered.
"Clearly, I knew and by the way, how did you meet him?" Hermione rapidly questioned. Regaining his composure once more, Malfoy answered, "Well Granger, that is none of your business, so keep your bushy head, Out. Of. It." Hermione wasn't going to take 'no' for an answer. She continued to pester him but he wouldn't budge. Merlin, this guy was almost as stubborn as SHE was.
Anyway, Hermione sought after Virgo during dinner in the Great Hall. He was in Slytherin (obviously) and his unmistakable white-blond hair wasn't that hard to find. Not to mention, he was quite lanky and was flanked by a group of girls, drooling all over him. He hadn't even been in school for a day but was already having an effect on students. At this, Hermione unconsciously smiled. Well, she had to admit, he was well-built. Unfortunately, this also meant that she couldn't get a chance to talk to him in private. Since he looked busy in conversation with his fellow Slytherins, so as not to disturb him, she whispered to him to meet her after dinner at the seventh floor. Well, hopefully he would. After all, the odds were quite high that he would ignore the fourth year that was beneath him.
However, much to her surprise, she saw him waiting for her even before she had arrived. Immediately, Hermione was slightly pleased with him. Punctuality was very important to her.
"Wow I wasn't expecting you to come." Hermione muttered under her breath.
"Well, I heard that the Brainiac was looking for me. Of course, I had to come. Besides if I didn't, you would hex me." Virgo had heard her and had given his own smart retort back.
Not one to beat around the bush, Hermione got to the point quickly. "How did you and your brother meet?" she asked.
Slightly taken aback, Virgo quipped, "Well, if you must know, it's quite a long story. By the way, don't tell anyone else. I'm only telling you because for some reason in my gut, I trust you." At this Hermione turned a violent shade of red. Wow, he really knew how to make her blush at any time of day. Virgo continued, "Well, a year before Draco was born, my dad, Lucius, was really hyped about the dark lord. All he cared for was power and our status. He was even willing to give up his own children to the dark lord. Anyway, my mother saw through this and since my father already knew she was pregnant, she told him that as custom in her family, the first child had to be born somewhere other than the country where his family resides. Also, the place had to be a secret. Once I was born, she told my father the baby had died. So, my mother raised me in France, and I went to school there. I was safe from the dark lord's clutches. But when Draco was born, he wasn't so lucky. Mother had no more excuses to give to my father. He was born and bred the Malfoy way, being told that muggle borns are filthy and only pure bloods deserve magic. From there, you know what happened."
This was a lot of information to understand. And the fact that he had shared this personal information with her was even more flattering. "Well," she said slowly assessing the situation, "I have a question. If Malfoy is so devoted to his dad, why didn't he rat you out?"
Did that sound too offending?
"I don't really know. You'll have to ask him. By the way, do you want to hang out with me tomorrow?" he said hesitantly, not knowing if she would decline.
"I'd love to. Besides, Harry and Ron are busy catching up with homework." She was pleased that she would finally be able to spend a day not involving Harry, Ron or homework. They decided a time and date. Luckily, the next Hogsmeade weekend was in just two days. Finally, she was wanted not for her brain but because someone wanted to just talk to her. Not that Ron and Harry didn't talk to her, but most of the things they did were talk about You-Know-Who and talk about homework and classes. This would be a nice breather.
As she waltzed to the dorm, her spirit lifted. "Harry! Ron!" she exclaimed slightly breathlessly due to running all the way down. "Oh, wow Hermione we were just going to ask you if um, you mind not coming with us to Hogsmeade? I'm going somewhere with Luna Neville and uh I forgot to invite you along so..." Harry asked. "Wow what a coincidence! I was just about to tell you that I couldn't go too!" Hermione gushed, eager that there would be no fights. Well now she would be able to go and have fun with Virgo.
