ACT 1 SCENE 9

Outside Charles’s house. Kayla, Chelsie, Connor, and Rachel

Kayla: See? Cameras.

Connor: I want to know how you knew they were here. You don’t have any kind of line of sight on the house. I didn’t even believe it when you told me.

Kayla: I’m a detective. It’s what I do.

Rachel: *To Connor* Sir, I don’t like this. How did she see something that we missed? Especially something as big as these cameras?

Connor: *To Rachel* This is why I called her in. She’s the best.

Kayla: You said the neighbor was calm during both interviews, what do you mean “calm”?

Rachel: Practically unresponsive. He liked to change the subject and interject things that couldn’t possibly happen.

-Car pulls up and Christoph gets out.

Christoph: What the hell are you people doing here?

Rachel: Sir, do you live here?

Christoph: Yeah. Me and a buddy share it. What is this about?

Connor: Do you mind coming down to the station? We have some questions to ask you.

Christoph: I just got home from a two week camping trip. Do you mind asking them here?

Kayla: When did you start having problems with gang activity?

-Everyone looks at her, shocked

Chelsie: Boss, How do you know that? There is nothing here to suggest gang activity.

Kayla: Use your eyes. That window is brand new, *Motions to the window* there is paint tag stains on the door, *Motions to the door* and I don’t know about you, but I don’t kick my trash cans hard enough to leave footprint outlines. *Motions to the trash cans*

-Christoph looks very uncomfortable and shaky

Christoph: Can we discuss this inside? I really just want to sit down It was a long two weeks and...

Connor: I think you better tell us what is going on here.

Christoph: They’ll kill me! As it is I’m a dead man walking!

Rachel: Sir, if you’ll calm down, we can keep you safe. We’ll take you down to the station...

Christoph: *Not listening* I have to leave town. They’ll never know, they’ll never know. I just have to get out of town. *Runs back to the car* I suggest you get out of town too before they kill you!

-Christoph exits.

Kayla: That didn’t go exactly as I planned.

Connor: You think!? We just lost our best lead!

Kayla: No, we didn’t. *Dangles a set of keys from her finger*

Rachel: How’d you get those?

Kayla: A magician never reveals her secrets.

Chelsie: *To Kayla* Boss, did you have this whole thing planned as soon as he got out of the car?

Kayla: As soon as we left the house. Him getting home was just an added bonus.

Chelsie: What were you going to do? You didn’t have the keys until he got home.

Kayla: *Pulls a bobby pin from Chelsie’s hair* A girl has her ways.

Connor: That would be breaking and entering, you know that, right?

Kayla: There would be nothing broken. It would just be entering.

Connor: Whatever. Let’s go.
