Chapter Two
Beauty Salon
Lauren
"Lauren! Get up!" Sarah shook me. I moaned and rolled over. She yanked the covers off of me. "Getcha ass up. It's eleven o'clock!" I mugged her. She laughed at me. "Get up. I'm about to go on to the salon." Sarah left.
I slowly got up from the couch. It felt like someone had beaten me up in my sleep. I felt terrible. I went to my bedroom. I almost scared myself when I looked in the mirror. My hair was all over my head. I took a quick hot shower and brushed my teeth. I flat ironed my long black hair which laid on my backbones. I lotioned my light brown skin with cocoa butter lotion. I threw on a pair of denim jeans and a pink crop top. I didn't like to wear heels because, I was already 5'10". I grabbed my Clark's from the closet and slid them on. I looked at myself in the body mirror. I looked good.
I grabbed my purse, keys, and cell phone. I locked up the house before leaving out and put the house key under the mat. I hopped in my all white Camaro that my grandma had bought me two years before. I got my shades from the glove department and placed them over my bright brown eyes.
I pulled from the driveway and into the streets of Atlanta, Georgia. I stopped by KFC before going to the salon. I immediately sarted with my first costumer. I washed her hair and blow dried it. "Lauren, that ass is gettin' fat." Katrece smacked me on the butt. I laughed at her. "You so lame." I started to wrap my customer's hair. "It really is." Lynn said, one of my workers. "Whatever. I ain't got time for y'all." My customer laughed. "Don't laugh at them. They ain't funny at all." I finished wrapping her hair and sat her under the dryer.
By the time six o'clock hit, I had already did ten heads. We closed up at seven, but I had no customers left. "You goin' out with us tonight Lauren?" Sarah asked me as she combed through her hair. "Nahh, maybe next time." I said. "You always say that. Ain't goin no where." KaTrece mugged me. "Anyway, I'm bout to head out. I'll see y'all." I grabbed my belongings. "Byeee." they sung as I walked out the door.
When I got into my car, I called my cousin Anthony. He answered on the third ring. "What up shawty."
"Fool, what you doin?" I asked him. "I'm just chillin". What you up to?"
"Bout to leave the salon. You wanna stay with me tongiht?"
"Yeah. Grab a box of pizza." He told me. "A'ight. The key under the mat."
"Okay." he hung up.
I left the salon and went to Little Ceasar's. I paid for two boxes of pepporoni pizza, it's Anthony's favorite. He was already there by the time I made it home.
"Ant!" I called for him as I entered the house. He walked into the living room. "Don't be callin' my name like that bruh." He took the boxes of pizza from my hand. "You been smoking in here?" I sniffed the air. I could smell marijuana, and it was strong. "Nahh. What you talm bout?" I looked at him. "You a lie. I can smell the weed."
Anthony is more like a brother than a cousin. Our grandmother raised and took care of us our whole lives. Back in high school, if one of us fought, both of us fought.
Anthony and I sat down on the black leather couch. He got one box of pizza and I got the other. "So, you seeing anybody yet?" Anthony asked me. I shook my head. "No!" He laughed. "You need to get over ole dude, forreal. I already beat his ass and everything. You too beautiful for that shit. Forreal dawg." I smiled at him. "Thanks. But imma start dating soon." I switched the TV on because I was tired of talking about it." Anthony was right though. At that moment, I knew it was time for me to start dating again.
