Chapter Fourteen
Surprise
Lauren
It'd been two weeks since Rashad got his truck back, got his job back, and went back to school. Anthony and I went to support him his first game. I must say, he was so raw in basketball. I'm talking mad, major skills! He had the crowd hype the entire time.
"So, how the music thing coming along?" I asked Quin as we walked through the park. We decided to spend a little time together. "It's good. You know I been in the studio all night, every night. I'm trying to get it together." Quin said rubbing his head, looking around.
"You act like you paranoid or sum. What's up?" I grabbed his arm so he could stop walking. "I got in some shit with some guys bout a month ago. Word on the street is,, they out to get you. They know you my girl. They don't know where you stay, but they do know where yo salon is. To keep customers, you, Sarah, and KaTrece from danger, you need to shut the shop down for a little while."
What the fuck? I had no idea what I had to do with this situation. Right then, I was scared out of my damn mind. "Quin, what the hell? You mean to tell me, there are people who want to kill me?!" I yelled. I was so angry that I wanted to cry. "Calm down baby." Quin hugged me gently. I pushed him away. "Take me home, right now!" He sighed. "Let's go then."
Quin still opened the door for me and I got in angrily. I texted Sarah and told her to close up the shop immediately. She asked why and I told her I would explain to her later. The ride home was a mad silence.
"Imma head on back to the studio." Quin said as he pulled into the driveway. I got out and stormed into the house. I wanted to kick and scream, hit anything or anyone. My phone started to ring. "Hello." I answered quickly. "Hey baby. What you doing?" It was grandma. "Oh hi mama. I'm not doing anything, just sitting around the house."
"Well baby, I need you to get here as soon as you can. I have a very special surprise." Before I could say anything, she had hung up. Grandma always had something up her sleeve.
I grabbed my keys and exited the door.I looked around, cautious of whether someone was watching me or not. I hurried into my car and locked the doors. Lauren why are you scared? You have a pistol in your purse! Myself was right. I had to stop being like that. Now let a nigga try me! I sped out of the driveway. Deep down, I was still scared as hell.
There were no cars in grandma's driveway when I pulled up. She probably just want me to taste some ingredients. I shook my head and laughed as I entered the house. "Gran!" I called for her. "In here baby!" I walked into the kitchen.
My heart nearly stopped when I saw who was sitting at the table. It was my mom. I stared at her like I'd seen a ghost. "Lauren." She got up from the table and walked over to me. Tears started to fall from her eyes. She hugged me tightly. I hugged her back. I closed my eyes and tears started to fall. "I missed you so much!" I cried out in joy. "I missed you too baby."
We stood there for a while, just hugging and crying. My prayers had finally been answered. I got to feel my mother's arms around me and to hear her voice again. Music to my ears. We finally pulled away from the hug. My mom had a mixture of brown and black hair, that went a little past her shoulders. Her pretty light skin and brown eyes was glowing, just like I remebered. She was beautiful. It didn't look like she had been in prison at all. "You've got so grown and beautiful." She rubbed my cheek. "I was thinking the same thing of you." I smiled at her. I was so happy I hardly knew what to say.
