"I don't do drugs. I am drugs." - Salvador Dali
When I was certain everybody was asleep that night, I crept out of my bed and went to my wardrobe. I pulled off my T-shirt, which had been bought a few weeks ago, and pulled on a strapless green bra. As I put on a black strappy top, I looked for my coat. My fake leather jacket to be exact.
I was a vegetarian, but I thought the jacket looked awesome on me so I begged and begged for it. I didn’t really have a reason to be a vegetarian, but I told people it was because I couldn’t stand the thought of eating something that once had a beating heart.
Creeping out of my bedroom, I shut the door quietly. I turned from closing the door and came face to face with Luisa. I let out a breath and closed my eyes, glad it wasn’t anybody else.
“What are you doing?” She hissed. She her pink dressing gown on and her matching slippers. My guess was that she was going to go to the toilet.
“I’m going out.” I whispered as quietly as I could.
“Where? Why? Who with?” She questioned. I whispered my plans into her ear. “You’re going to get in trouble at the end of this.” Luisa told me. “Hell, if you get caught you’ll go to a young offender’s institution! If you have to go at least let me come with you. I don’t want to do anything. I just want to make sure you’re okay and don’t get into any trouble with the police or anything of that sort.” She cleared her throat quietly and carried on talking as if I were listening. “Say you had… unprotected sex. What then? If I wasn’t there, there would be nobody to stop you from doing something really stupid like that. Sure do drugs and stuff, but just… I’m going with you. End of. I’ll meet you round the corner of the house. Wait for me."
Luisa and I heard footsteps directly behind us. We whipped around together and screamed when we saw a tall, male figure. “Shh!” It hissed at us. I recognized the voice instantly. My brother.
“Jesus!” I hissed at him.
“Not Jesus. Even better. Me.” He said confidently. He crossed his arms. Luisa looked from Owen to me. She seemed confused. She obviously didn’t tell him anything. Good on her.
“Is that one of your chat up lines?” Luisa asked, then blushed. Owen nodded, not being able to see Luisa’s pinked cheeks. I checked the time on my phone. It was 10:04pm.
“Let’s go. I need to go now.” I reminded Luisa. I didn’t mind if Owen tagged along. He was only a year younger than me, but he could pass as being older. After re-explaining where I was going to Owen, he said roughly the same things as Luisa did. As we walked nearer and nearer to the rough side of town, Luisa and Owen began to say less and less. I was thankful and found my way to where Kyle said he would be.
We heard a few screams echo throughout the night. They pierced our ears. We thought nothing of it. Screams always happened late at night, didn’t they? We didn’t know that they were the start of death.
I was able to see swirling and dancing smoke rising from the area. I also heard talking and laughing. Drunken laughing. Luisa and Owen said they’d stay around the area and come back for me later. In my opinion, I think they were intimidated by just the sounds of a group of boys. Owen didn’t have many friends, so he wasn’t confident around boys. He preferred the company of girls. Luisa didn’t have any friends other than me. Adding to that, she’d never had a boyfriend and Owen didn’t count as one. So neither had confidence around the male species.
When I was with the gang, they offered me new drugs, booze, sex and opportunities to break the law each time. I was waiting for Kyle to tell me about this new drug he had got his hands on. Finally, he had produced a small packet of pills. The drug was cased in yellow and red plastic, like pills from a chemist would be.
