“Sometimes you can’t change destiny. If it wants you dead, you should be dead.” - Unknown
In the distance, I could clearly see a hut. I wasn’t sure if it was the hut Ash was looking for, but it was a hut all the same. Ash told me he would go and get Katherine and Owen. He also said that I should wait where I was. Fat chance! I approached the hut, because that was where we were going after all, and looked it up and down. It was build out of wood that was starting to wear away.
The windows hadn’t been smashed, which was an amazingly good thing, and the door was still intact. Less chance of dying if zombies attacked… or more. Fate had our lives in hand. Not us anymore. I peeked inside after opening the door. It wasn’t anything special. There was a maroon sofa that had been ripped in various places, a TV that obviously wasn’t going to work, a couple of dining table chairs, and a dining table that you defiantly couldn’t eat on. In the corner, there was an old gas cooker, that might possibly work, and a sink.
Above it, was a row of cupboards. The walls hadn’t been wallpapered, or painted. They were just wooden. The floor had been half carpeted, half stoned. I couldn’t see any light source, so I decided to not hunt for a switch. It would’ve been a miracle if it had worked anyway.
I heard a bang from behind me, and I turned round as quick as the apocalypse happened. Ash, Owen and Katherine were at the door, in the doorway. Ash had a neutral look on his face, and didn’t seem to mind that I disobeyed him. I didn’t care either. Owen and Katherine looked around the hut. “At least it’s secure.” Owen observed. I nodded then sat on the ratty sofa, and huffed. I hadn’t slept properly in months, years if that.
“You did look how I feel.” Owen said to me. I gave him an evil glare. “You girls have the sofa. Me and Ash will be alright on the floor, wont we?” Ash nodded. There wasn’t really room for 2 on the sofa, but Katherine and I could probably make amends. There wasn’t much of us to fit on the sofa anyway.
“Yeah. Thanks Ash, Owen.” Katherine fluttered her eye lashes at them both. Creep. There was flirting, and then there was that. That wasn’t even flirting. Subtle much? Owen seemed to ignore it; he was still in mourning for Luisa. I was too, but very deep down.
Owen and Ash spoke a little while after that. They were discussing a plan. I wanted to laugh. The last person that wanted, or even could, come up with a plan was Owen. It was me who did that type of thing. Katherine and I didn’t speak much – or even at all. Even more, she reminded me of Owen. Even more, this made me hate her even more. Ash could clearly look after somebody. Better than we – Owen and I – had looked after Luisa. There were two of us, and one Ash.
That night, the boys slept on the floor, and Katherine and I squashed up on the sofa. I didn’t fall asleep instantly, as I thought I would. I was too on edge. Nobody was staying awake to check for zombies. They usually attacked at night. It didn’t confuse them so much. In the daylight, there are much more different sounds than at night. A zombies hearing was good enough that they could hear a pin drop in a Shopping Centre. Of course, everybody in that Shopping Centre would be dead if a zombie got in there.
I stayed awake, despite my tiredness, to keep watch. When I got up, I heard a deep voice. It wasn’t Owens, and it defiantly wasn’t Katherine’s. I wasn’t even sure if it was Ashes. I turned round to where she boys should be. Ash had sat on one of the chairs and was staring at me.
“What are you doing up?” He asked. I decided to be snarky and give him a question. One that didn’t make sense.
“Who are you? My father?” I leant against the arm of the sofa not wanting to sit on it and squash Katherine’s head. Ash chuckled, and shook his head. “What are you doing up?” I hit back. He shrugged and got off the chair.
