8 (Paul's Point of View)

"What do you think is going on in there?" Kaityln asked with a smile.

I glanced up the stairs and at Kaityln's closed bedroom door where George and Audrey were alone.

"They're shagging," John winked.

"You're such a-" Kaityln started.

"Can I have some tea, grandma?" I asked to cut Kaitlyn off. As grandma nodded and left the room, I told her "ta."

Kaityln sighed. "Audrey is so lucky. She's beautiful, talented, and can have any man she wants. I just wish I could do that..." Kaityln seemed depressed and she quickly looked at John and looked back down. It broke my heart, I love Kaityln and hated to see her so caught up over a guy, especially one like John.

"What happened to your little girlfriend?" I asked John.

He blew air out of his mouth. "Beats me. Probably shagging someone at the moment."

Kaitlyn sighed.

"You look very beautiful, darling." I smiled at her.

She blushed gently and smiled a bit. "Thank you, Paul."

"You always look beautiful." John said.

Her face turned extremely red, and her smile got wider.

How much longer could I take this torture of not being the one to be able to do this to her? I compliment her every day, but it doesn't have the same effect on her. Maybe I should be like John, shag other girls, it seems to work.

"So what happened to Audrey?" Grandma asked as she joined us again, handing me my tea.

I slipped off my leather jacket and shoes, getting more comfortable in the house I could call my second home. "Michael cheated on her."

Grandma tsked. "She must feel horrid! And on her birthday! Oh, I feel so bad for her!"

"I wouldn't feel too bad for her, grandma. George is up there talkin' to her right now," John smirked.

"Oh, how sweet! He's been in love with her for ages, hasn't he Kaityln? Almost as long as you've loved John, I'd say!"

My heart fell to my stomach. 'Love'?

John's face went pale and he was silent for a moment.

Grandma's face turned red at her embarrassment of exposing her granddaughter's secret. "I think I'll go," she said shamefully. She left us to go to her room upstairs, walking quickly.

Kaityln looked at John, her mouth open and her cheeks red. "John, I- uh- I-"

John stood up. "I think I better go. Tell Aubrey I said goodnight." He began walking towards the door.

I glanced at Kaityln sympathetically. "I'm sorry," I whispered. "Wait, John, I'll go with you!" I put my jacket and shoes back on, walking quickly to catch up to him at the door.

We left the large house behind, John walking quickly in front of me. It began to sprinkle, like always. It set the perfect mood for the day that should've been wonderful. I feel bad for the girls, they've been through so much in one day.

"Why are you runnin'? You love her. You know that right? You love her too." I said, breathing heavy from trying to keep up with John.

John reached the car and got in the driver's seat, ignoring me. He started the car, ready to drive.

I got in the car as well, my hair wet, making water drop down my face. "You should be happy she loves you. I would kill to have Kaityln love me."

John turned the car off and stared out the windshield. "I don't want to love someone."

"But you do," I said gently. "I know it. I can tell."

"I loved me mum. So much. And- and she's gone," he started crying. "I can't handle havin' another woman I love leave me." He faced me now, tears streaming down his face, as well as water from the rain. "That's why I'm with so many girls, Paul. I leave them before they can leave me. So I don't get hurt."

"Kaityln won't leave you."

He scoffed and shook his head. "Mimi said that about me mum."

I started crying too. "I know how hard it is to lose your mum. It leaves an emptiness in you. But you can't let that control you, John. You're John, fucking, Lennon. The 'Nowhere Boy.' You're my hero, and I can't let my hero just let himself be alone for the rest of his life."

John laughed, wiping away tears. "Does she really love me?"

I nodded. "More than you'll ever know."

"But you love her as well?"

I nodded, sadly. "But she's not meant for me. She's meant to be with you."

He took a few minutes to breathe and then got out of the car, stepping into the now pouring rain. He walked to Kaityln's front pouch and knocked. Seconds later, Kaityln was there. It was hard to see in the night, but it seemed like she was crying.

John said a couple words and then cupped her face in his hands and kissed her.

She kissed him back, and smiled once it was over, then pulled him into another one.

I shook my head and looked down. "You're a fucking idiot. She could've loved you." I said to myself, suddenly getting angry.

I looked back to John and Kaityln, seeing them continue to kiss. Then, I looked up to Kaityln's bedroom window, seeing George kissing Audrey and then talking to her, then kissing her again.

Both couples were so happy, and I had nothing but meself.

I moved over to the driver's side of John's car and started it. It was 12:30, the pubs were still wide awake. A good drink and shag would help me, I thought to myself as I drove away from Kaityln's house.
