There were a million possible explanations for my racing heart. It could be the fact that Steven asked me to run in small leaps to warm up before the shoot, or it could be because it was hot; I was sweating like a pig. Or it could be that Steven yelled at everyone and everything.
Or it could be because of what I knew I had to do in just a few minutes. As I ran back and forth in the sand, I tried not to look over at Harry, who was doing push-ups with Zayn. He’d explained me that it was a nifty little trick to make sure his muscles looked good on camera.
Not that he needed to look better… I silenced my inner voice.
In all honesty, I knew that chances were that Harry was the reason my heart tried to make its own drum solo.
“Cami!” Steven yelled.
I ran over to him, trying not to pant. God, I needed to get into shape. This was killing me. It felt like sweat was pouring out of me. I was just lucky that I wasn’t a visible sweater and that the t-shirt was big enough to hide my body’s response. Despite that, the temperature did little to help. Even though the night had already fallen, I didn’t feel much difference from a few hours earlier. Only the random breeze had any effect, but I was still looking forward to getting into the water.
“Yes?” I said, shaking my shirt to cause a bit of ventilation to my overheated body.
“Are you ready for this?” His face took on a worried expression, and I knew he was referring to the break-in.
I nodded. “I’ll live. There’s no use sitting around crying over a stolen book. Besides, the police are on top of it.”
“Are you sure?” He looked at me, possibly trying to study me for any signs of distress. I squirmed a bit under the stare, but I couldn’t blame him. If the roles had been reversed, I would probably have done the same.
“Some petty thief isn't going to ruin this movie, Steven,” I said with a smile. “I’m ready.”
“Alright then,” he said. He turned away from me and yelled. “Ready to shoot the scene.”
The crew members all ran to their places, and I got ready beside Harry. I was supposed to run a bit, making Harry catch me.
“Hey,” he said.
I smiled at him. “Hey.”
“You haven’t changed your mind about tonight, right?” He looked at me. “It’s not going to be crazy, just the beach house and an open bar—no strangers.”
“Sure, I’m still up for it.” I smiled and waited for Steven to yell action. As I heard my cue, I looked at Harry. “You have to catch me first, though.”
He laughed at my poor joke, and I began to run. As I ran by the cameraman, I slipped into the mindset of Charlie. It became easier every time.
Still laughing, I tried to fake a right, but eventually, Harry’s arms wrapped against me, causing us to tumble to the sand in laughter. Our laugh drowned out and I looked up to meet his eyes.
“Hi,” he said.
“Hi,” I whispered.
He looked away shyly. “I want to tell you something.”
“What?” I felt my stomach turn at his words. Was this a good thing or a bad thing?
His green eyes met mine, and he used a hand to flip his hair away from his face. He licked his lips. “I… I like you, Charlie.”
“I like you too, Luke…” I whispered. Wetting my own lips, I wanted him to kiss me.
As his face edged closer to mine, I held my breath. Right before our lips touched, his face lit up into a smile.
“What?” I asked.
“I dare you to jump into the ocean with me.”
Before I could answer, he jumped to his feet and took off his shirt, tossing it aside. I saw him run straight towards the waves. It was hard not to stop and stare; the moonlight illuminated him, making the water sparkle. It was heartbreakingly beautiful.
I took off the shorts, dropping them to the sand and slowly walked out to him. With every step, I felt butterflies in my stomach, but I didn’t stop before I reached him.
He looked down at me, and he took my hand, placing it over his chest. It was vague, but I could feel his heartbeat against my palm. I turned my face upwards and sucked in a breath.
His beautiful features physically hurt me.
I moved my hand up behind his neck, standing on my toes. Harry’s arms wrapped around me, holding me close to him. He grinned.
“What?” I whispered.
“You’re beautiful,” he said. And then he leaned down to kiss me. My arms wrapped around his neck.
Our lips touched, and the now familiar spark seemed to be ignited inside me. My skin tingled, and I kissed him back.
It felt like the kiss was a mixture between eternity and a second. I didn’t want it to stop, but I knew we could keep it going.
And right on cue, Steven’s voice penetrated my clouded mind.
“Cut!”
Harry and I returned to reality, and I noticed one of the cameramen soaked beside us with a handheld camera on his shoulder. I smiled to him shyly, before making my way to the shore again.
“That was perfect!” Steven grinned.
Yeah, it was you dog, my inner voice commented. I wanted to roll my eyes at it, but I didn’t want to seem more insane than I already did. Seriously though, that annoying voice appeared like some random assassin, out to kill my logic every time.
Diana stood beside him with a big smile. “It was hauntingly beautiful, Cami. I loved it.”
I smiled to the both of them, afraid that if I spoke, my teeth would clatter from the cold.. I hadn’t been able to feel the wind in the water, but now, I shivered every time the breeze blew past me.
“Oh darling,” Diana said. “You must be freezing. Let’s get you inside and into some dry clothes.” She wrapped a towel around my body, steering me gently back to the beach house. Before I got too far away, I looked back at Harry, who was jumping up and down to get warmth. I smiled at him, and he returned the smile.
As much as I didn’t want to go, I knew that I wouldn’t be away for long. I’d see him soon enough.
