Keefe managed to bribe Dex's happiness by offering to take him to a store and pay for whatever Technopath parts he wanted - even if he thought the amount was a little excessive. He also ended up buying them dessert back at the restaurant and wow he did not know that small boy could eat so much food and still remain a twig. It was almost concerning - the Empath had to keep wondering if his stomach would be okay, but he'd proved himself just fine.
What a weirdo. Full one day and completely starving the next.
"What do you think I should make next?" Dex asked as he took a U-turn in the isle they were in, going back to look at some golden bolts. Keefe realized it must've sucked a little bit to have an ability where you had to literally buy parts just so you could use it.
"I like the hover boots idea you had earlier," Keefe suggested.
Dex seemed to study the materials in front of him before he shook his head. He stood back up straight with a grin. "You don't think it'd be too chaotic with the triplets?"
"As long as you hid it from them, we'd be fine. You could seriously be in the air all day!"
Dex snorted. The boy turned once again, pulling Keefe along into a new section. They were grasped hand in hand just in case they ran into anyone who 'knew.'
Really, that was the only reason. Yep.
"Oooh! I haven't seen these types of wires in a while. I wonder if-"
"Disgusting."
Keefe turned his head to stare at a woman who wore a disapproving look on her face. "Excuse me, ma'am?"
She glared at the two of them, and, taking a glance at their hands, scowled. "You don't belong here. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised that it's the two of you who are like this."
Dex's emotions varied from rage, to fear, back to rage, and then something Keefe couldn't recognize in all the cluster. And then Dexter Alvin Dizznee began to cry.
Which very quickly turned into wheeping.
Which became sobbing.
Until he was full on wailing in the middle of the store.
Keefe's eyes widened until they were the size of dinner plates and he quickly grabbed Dex's arm, resting his opposite hand on the boy's cheek, trying to get him to look back at him.
He'd never seen Dex to emotional and it was utterly terrifying. What was wrong with him? Was this something he was just extremely sensitive around? He never should've asked him to do this...
"Baby, baby," Keefe tried to sooth, but the other wouldn't stop. Not even when a store clerk came over, asking what was wrong.
Keefe looked up at the person only to realize the commotion had ended up gathering a bit of a crowd, all wondering if someone was hurt. He opened his mouth to speak, but was cut off.
"She - she - she's being really mean and ca - calling us 'disgusting'!" Dex got out before dropping his arm which was pointed at the terrified looking lady and allowing himself to be pulled into Keefe's arms.
No one said a word as the woman was dragged away without question and Keefe stared at the crowd, probably looking like an idiotic boyfriend.
"Shh, come on baby boy. Let's go somewhere safe and quiet." At that point he just had to assume it was a panic attack the other was having. You don't see Dex Dizznee in hysterics often.
Especially not upon something he's criticized for practically everyday!
Gently, Keefe guided him to the only place he could think of: the bathroom. Closing the door behind him, he turned to face the other who seemed to have begun to regain himself.
"Are you okay, hun? Do you need to go home? We can come back another ti-"
"Wow, she was a dick."
"... What?"
Dex rubbed his eyes and sniffled. "I hate her. She, like, never comes into the store and when she does on the rare occasion I'm pretty sure it's just to grill me and my dad."
Keefe didn't know how to respond to the sudden mood change. "I - uh - are you okay?"
"I'm fine. Upset, but fine." Dex still let himself be pulled into the Empath's arms.
"I don't mean to be insensitive or anything," Keefe said slowly, "but were you faking that?"
Dex shrugged. "Would you be angry if I said yes?"
Keefe looked down at the strawberry blond hair. "You're kidding me."
Dex's mood shifted to something of guilt as he pulled back with an equally guilty smile. "No?"
Keefe felt his mouth drop. "I don't even know how to respond to that. But I almost feel proud... You're sure you're okay though? That was a lot of crying..."
Dex snickered and his puffy red eyes narrowed. "You've taught me well. And besides, yelling at her would only make it worse. Embarrassing her on the other hand..."
"I think I'm in love with you," Keefe mumbled, pulling him back into a hug.
"What'd you say?"
"Nothing. I am just very happy I chose you as my fake boyfriend."
Dex gave a small giggle. "Me too. Now we should probably get out of the store. You can act super protective boyfriend-y."
"Yeah, there won't be any problem there after what I just witnessed... You're absolutely positive you're alri-"
"Keefe."
