Chapter Seven

Atlanta

▬ Third Person- No one’s P.O.V ▬

“You look tired…” Electra Walsh gave out a loud sigh as the statement she had most wished to avoid today was put to her.

“Yeah, didn’t sleep,” Electra replied bringing a spoonful of oatmeal to her mouth.

“And why not?” Shane demanded sitting down beside her on the log which she was sat on. Sighing again, she looked up to meet his brown eyes which were full of concern.

“Every time I closed my eyes I just-” she started before cutting herself off with yet another sigh. “I saw their faces Shane,” she got straight to the point. “….the people who have died, the- the people who I’ve killed,” she admitted looking down at the metal bowl which was full of oatmeal.

“They aint people Ellie,” Shane stated dismissively before taking a spoonful out of his own oatmeal. It scared him, how quickly he had managed to adapt to this world. It scared him far more than those walkers.

“They were people,” Electra said simply. “They had friends, a family, a job, a life…a future,” she trailed of her eyes looking distant. “Just like you and me Shane, they had a life and I-I just stole it away from them,” Electra said bitterly, ridden with guilt.

“No you didn’t,” Shane denied after taking a spoonful of oatmeal. “Something else robbed them of that far before you got into contact with them, when they go bit, when they got infected,” Shane said, she was still refusing to meet his eyes still ashamed of herself. “You did what you needed to do to survive- you had no other choice,” he explained as she took another mouthful.

“Don’t make it right,” Electra counter argued.

“Never said it did,” Shane shot back before taking her face in his hands, forcing her to look at him. “And believe me, I like it about as much as you do. But it’s killed or be killed, you do it to protect yourself, your friends, your family…You’re putting them out of their misery,” Shane stated. “And to be honest with you I’d be far more worried if you don’t feel like you do. That guilt, that remorse….it shows your humanity, people go crazy when the world turns to shit, but you? You’re still good and pure, what everyone needs in this new world,” Shane nodded before he let go of her face.

“Thanks Shane,” Electra smiled at him before Shane stuck his spoon in her bowl and took her last spoonful of oatmeal and put it inside his mouth. “Hey,” Electra said hitting him in the arm.

“Glenn’s leaving soon,” Shane stated stacking the bowls to the side before grabbing his sisters hand and pulling her to her feet.

Glenn found himself surrounded by the remaining survivors who were all wishing him luck, all except two men who were stood at the side watching the scene take place.
