chapter: 47- Happiness

STEFFANY’S POV.

Today is Addie’s birthday and also his operation. Nagkita na si Calex at Addie kahapon, I made his request come true. Sobrang saya ni Addie ng makita n’ya si Calex. He is a smart kid alam kong alam nito na may namamagitan sa amin ni Calex. He even saw Calex holding my hand and all he did is to smile towards us. I don’t know but all I can feel is genuine happiness for the kid.

“Here..” napabaling ako kay Calex ng mag-abot ito sa akin ng kape at tumabi sa akin ng upo dito sa waiting area sa tapat ng operating room.

Si Blythe naman at Trisha ay nasa chapel at nagdarasal, maya-maya nandito na naman ulit ang mga iyon. This is Addie’s final operation kung saan tuluyan ng isasara ang butas sa puso nito. Naubos na kasi lahat ng savings ni Blythe kaya nahirapan na itong makapag-ipon para sa operasyon ni Addie. Hindi naman ganun ka laki ang sahod n’ya. She’s a cashier in a nearby restaurant.

“What are you thinking?” tanong nito at hinawakan ang malaya kong kamay.

“After this uuwi na akong pilipinas. Doon naman ang aayusin kong gulo.”

“Then let’s go home together. I will still look after Addie, it’s better to be this way. After all, I’m still his father we can’t change it.” yes, he’s Addie’s Dad. Bagay na hindi na namin mababago ngayong nalaman na namin ang existence ni Addie.

“No, you stay here and look after Addie. He needs you, para na rin bumilis ang pag galing n’ya.”

“Blythe is here to take good care of Addie. I can even hire a private nurse to watch over him.” parang inis nitong sabi.

“It’s not like that. Ngayon lang kayo nagkita and for the past years hindi n’ya naranasan na may Ama s’ya sa tabi niya. Give the kid some consideration.”

“Is that what you want?” matabang nitong tanong sa akin.

“It’s not what I want, It’s what we have to do.” sagot ko naikinabuntong hininga nito.

“Let’s see each other after Addie’s recovery. I’ll be waiting in the place where we first meet, in the place where we felt so much happiness. In the place where we suppose to start our new beggining. I’ll wait you there Cal.” I smile at him kahit na unti-unting nadudurong ang puso ko.

I learned in life that aside from growing up we also learn to value things and people around us. Hindi iyong tipong sarili lang natin ang ini-intinde natin. Life is not just about rainbows and butterflies. Sa paglipas ng panahon we also found out that life is also about rain and darkness. We will learn to be strong by accepting those negatives.

“I will miss you then..” sabi nito at isinandal ang ulo sa balikat ko.

“I love you so much that I am missing you right now.” sabi ko din at ipinatong ang ulo ko sa ulo n’ya.

Nasa ganuon kaming posisyon ng bumukas ang pinto ng operating room at lumabas doon si Ate Janithe na pawisan. Kakabalik lang din nila Blythe kaya mabilis itong lumapit pati si Calex.

“Good news! The operation is successful but we still need to transfer Addie to the ICU for further observation.” narinig kong pahayag ni Ate Janithe bago ako lumabas.

I also feel relieved dahil sa ligtas na ang bata. I don’t know where this came from pero I feel so much lighter, parang may tinik na natanggal sa dibdib ko.

“I think you need this.” biglang may nagsalita sa likuran ko at nilagay sa kamay ko ang chocolate.

“I’m not sad Ate, actually I’m happy for Addie, for them. I don’t know.”
