I sniffed and grabbed the tissues off the table. I checked my purse once more. I was fairly certain I had everything: tissues, purse, phone, spare key.
"You really don't have to come." Chaol said, sticking his head round the kitchen doorway as he endlessly fiddled with the cuffs of his shirt.
My eyelids were heavy, my throat burned from the effort of breathing and my nose ran. "Its your promotion party, I have to come."
He stepped round the corner, his whole body on full display. I smiled inwardly. He was in a pair of dark jeans pair with a black shirt that had the faintest imprints of silver sewn throughout. I stretched up and fixed his hair, whilst his hands ran round the waistline of my dress. "Ok, but I don't want you getting worse than you are."
I smiled, tugged a tissue from the box and blew my nose. I had come down with a mild flu since gaining my temporary job at the stables - I was covering for a stable hand who had broken a leg mountain biking. It meant I had to help in all fronts of the stables working days, which meant the child gymnkhanas, who were riddled with flu, bugs and nits. Luckily I had only caught the flu from them, not the nits or the various tape worms.
"You're too sweet." I teased him. "I want to come to this, and no flu is going to stop me."
He smirked and ran a hand through his hair unfixing all my work. He gave me a brief kiss. "Then we had better be going or we'll be late." He glanced at his watch. "We're already going to be late, we have to go."
I laughed at him, brushed away the creases in his shirt and followed him out the door. His promotion party was being held at one of the beach front pubs, and as I understood from Chaol there was to be a whole range of people there tonight. We got out the car, and as we walked in together Chaol's arm found a comfortable spot on my waist. We hung our coats up on the pegs just inside the doorway, the pub buzzed with life and noise, full of the rich smell of meats and Sunday roasts.
His party was being held in a small area round the back, where two or three large pub tables sat, and a glimpse of the stage was. Apparently there was a lot of live music tonight from local bands, according to the bill board hanging behind the batman's head. I clung tightly to Chaol as we neared the group, he said I wouldn't really know anyone here tonight. He had said it in his efforts to get me to stay at home and rest, but after three dates and my mind convinced we were dating I wasn't going to let him come alone.
Immediately I recognised Jay, Jess and Dom amongst the crowd cheering as Chaol arrived. There were a few others, the lifegaurd volunteers, some lads from Dom's bar including Jermemy and his partner Steven.
Chaol squeezed my hip and broke contact with me going to greet everyone. When it came to a new face Chaol would drag me over and introduce me. The gays would comment on my dress and the straights would look me up and down, holding out a sweaty hand. I clung, quite happily, at Chaol's side. Blowing my nose, coughing, and apologising for my croaky throat the whole way round.
Chaol gave me a small squeeze after having done the last introduction. "I'm going to go talk to these lot."
I smiled at him. "I'll go talk to Dom." I wasn't that interested in their talk anyway. Besides, I had to make a comment to Dom - this was the first time I ever recall seeing him with a top on.
I chatted away to Dom, catching Chaol's eyes several times, it made me blush knowing he was always looking out for me. Not intruding like Vikki had done, not telling at me that I shouldn't speak fo other people. Chaol was concerned about my flu, and brought a huge warmth to my chest.
The place was buzzing with energy and I couldn't be happier, Chaol deserved this. I laughed and coughed as he bounded up to me. "I'm on drinks, what does everyone fancy?"
"Pint of larger would be great mate." Dom said.
"Y/n?"
"Shall I drive?" I was being practical, it was unfair if Chaol was the only one who couldn't drink at his own promotion party.
He shrugged. "I'm more than happy to drive if you want to drink."
I shook my head. "My throat isn't up for drinking tonight. You drink I'll drive."
Chaol seemed pleased by the deal, his smile growing larger. "Do you want a sprite or a coca cola then?"
I imagined myself wondering round with a burning throat and hiccups, not a good idea at all. "Just tap water."
Chaol grinned, winked and went off to get more orders.
