Chapter 20: Injuries

Chara

The sound of Liz turning to dust made Chara feel...sad. Despite everything the lizard girl had done to her, she couldn't bring herself to hate her. She had truly believed humans were evil, and had been trying to free everyone. Even though she hadn't seemed entirely sane, Chara knew there had been some good in her. Looking at the heartbroken expression on Sans's face, she could tell he felt the same.

Chara slowly felt blackness drawing in on her. She was in so much pain again that she couldn't stay conscious for a moment longer.

When Chara woke up she was in a lab. But it wasn't the dark lab that had belonged to Liz. It was Undyne's lab. Chara was lying on a bed in the middle of a white room, while Undyne, Alphys, Sans, and Papyrus sat in chairs at the foot of the bed.

Chara was aware that her ribs, hips, arms, and head were all bandaged. There was a patch over her left eye as well. She felt weak but not like she was in any pain.

"She's awake!" Sans cried happily, jumping out of his chair. He ran over to the side of the bed close to Chara's face. "How are you feeling?"

A smile made its way across Chara's face. "Much better now." She replied warmly, reaching up to brush her fingers across Sans's adorable cheek.

"I thought we were going to lose you!" Sans cried. "I'm so happy you're still here!"

Sans

Sans gazed at Chara with tears streaming down his cheeks bones. He gave her a quick hug.

"I'm glad to be here." She told him, her voice full of affection. Sans blushed as he stepped back. She sat up, only to quickly lie back down with a pained noise.

"Careful." Undyne warned her nervously. "Y-you're in a bad state."

Chara winced. "How bad?"

"You have two broken ribs and a few cuts on your arm. You're also s-suffering from internal bl-bleeding and have a d-dislocated hip." Undyne informed her. "A-along with a black eye and a concussion. Oh a-and some chemical damage to your brain."

"Undyne I think that's enough." Alphys told the scientist with a hearty chuckle. "You don't want to scare Chara."

Undyne nodded. "R-right." She turned to Chara, wincing. "S-sorry! Your injuries are bad, is all."

Sans turned away from them for a moment. He felt awful, as though the whole thing had been his fault. It was all a huge mess. He couldn't bear to see Chara injured.

"How long will it take Chara to heal?" Sans asked, turning again to face Undyne.

"I-I can't be sure." Undyne looked at a monitor that was close to Chara with a frown on her face. "I...think it will be a while until she can go home. I'll take good care of her here, though!"

Although Sans was disappointed that Chara couldn't come home, he trusted Undyne completely. She'd take care of the human.

Chara

The first few days were painful. Sans managed to visit every day, bringing Chara little hand puzzles to do while she recovered. Alphys also visited to comment on how strong Chara was. But Papyrus hadn't visited once, which worried her. How was he coping with the permanent loss of his old friend Liz? Was he hurt?

Poor Paps. Chara thought. I'll talk to him whenever I see him next. This must be so awful for him.

Chara could hardly move. Any movement brought fierce agony to her body. Undyne had insisted that she stayed still. She wondered if she would ever heal properly. Undyne had told her she would, but she didn't feel any better. She felt weak and paralyzed.

"The pain serum that was injected into your body is still lingering a bit." Undyne had explained to her. "Y-you're gonna have to stay a long t-time so I can properly remove all of it from your system."

Chara had to take special medicine every day to help her, but she didn't feel good. Every day was painful. She was just lucky to have Sans, her faithful boyfriend, calling her many times a day and visiting her. And Undyne was great company as well. She brought her snacks and took a TV into the room so they could watch anime together. Alphys and Sans had even come together to watch anime as well. But not Papyrus. Chara worried about the tall skeleton.

Sans

Sans woke up early and quickly put his clothes on. It had been a full week since Chara had been rescued and sent to recover with Undyne. He was just on his way to visit her, bearing the wonderful gift of taco seasoning. For when she recovered, of course. As he walked downstairs he saw that Papyrus was on the couch sleeping. He was twitching wildly in his sleep, mumbling too. Sans was tempted to wake him up, guessing that he was having a nightmare, but he knew it was dangerous to wake anyone up during a nightmare, especially Papyrus. So he just sighed and left the house to visit Chara.
