The room was small and shabby.

The bed was a torn mattress on the ground, no blankets.

I leaned against the thin, locked door and listened to the conversation Devon a Julio were having.

"... not her biggest fan, but no blankets? It's torture in there, Devon."

"We don't have enough bedding, Julio. We can only give her rations."

"We can't give her medicine either. You know what we have to do if she gets sick."

Devon paused.

"I know."

My eyebrows creased and I stopped listening.

What would they do to me? They said they were peaceful.

I fingered my necklace as I thought.

=+= 2 WEEKS LATER =+=

The last two weeks were not even close to my first day here.

I dunno exactly what it is, but I know I'm sick.

Two weeks of sleeping with no blanket catches up to you.

I muffled a sneeze and felt my stomach lurch.

The door cracked open.

"We need a bit of help in the kitchen." Julio told me.

I ran to the corner of my room and threw up.

"Oh my gosh."

Julio rushed over, not knowing what to do.

He patted my back.

After I was finished, I just started crying.

Few things are worse than a guy when you're crying.

Julio stared at me and patted me on the head like a dog.

=+= Mini Time Skip =+=

I sat in a chair around the meeting room with a blanket wrapped around my shoulders.

"No." Will demanded. "We're not kicking her out."

"We're not spending meds on her either." Ryan stated.

"I'm sorry, we can't keep her here." Devon announced.

My eyes widened.

"P-please... I'm f-fine." I stuttered through the shivers.

"You can't! I won't let you!" Will yelled and punched the table.

"I know it looks like it, but this isn't her." Devon reminded him.

Every inch of Will's face was strained and angry.

"It's exactly like her and you know it! I'm not letting you do this again!"

"He's got a point." Devon admitted.

"We have to!" Ryan yelled.

"It's a death sentence!" Will yelled.

"I'm with Will." Julio spoke up. "There's no way she'll last a night."

"H-hey!" I exclaimed.

"Shut it, charity case."

"We're throwing her out." Mitch agreed.

Mitch and Mike grabbed Will and Julio.

Devon's eyes widened.

"If you aren't going to lead, I will." Ryan stated and glanced at Parker and Dakota. "Whose side are you on?"

"I-" Parker started. He paused and looked around the room and hung his head in shame. "I'm with you."

Everyone looked at Dakota.

"I dunno. I gotta make sure Dashiell gets fed." He hugged the infant in his arms. He sat next to me. "I'm neutral until further notice."

"Well, Parker." Ryan nodded at Parker and motioned to Devon.

Parker ran over and grabbed Devon.

"We have a place to go." I whispered to Dakota while Ryan was ranting about rations. "It has room and food and a supplier."

"Really?"

"Ya, it's a day's walk from here." I came up with a plan. I whispered it to him and he nodded.

He looked up at Ryan.

"I'm with you, Ryan."

"W-what!?" I yelled.

"Dakota, no!" Julio yelled.

"I'm sorry, I need to feed my son."

"You can go back to the rooms, Dakota." Ryan smiled. "We've got this covered."

Dakota left the room with Dashiell.

Ryan ripped the blanket off me, causing a wave of sharp cold.

He grabbed me by my shoulders and moved me.

My eyelids drooped and I stumbled over my own feet.

He picked me up and opened a hatch. Their base was a bomb shelter or something.

He threw me onto the cold, wet pavement. I couldn't find the strength to pick myself up so I just flipped over and tried to breathe.

I heard more yelling.

"... Join her?"

"Ya..."

"... Do it!"

Someone landed next to me.

Two more followed.

I tried to keep my eyes open. I concentrated on breathing.

It was so, so cold. My fingers were numb and my arms wouldn't move on command.

"... Okay?" I noticed someone hovering over me. They pressed their hand to my forehead. I tried to lean into the touch because of how warm it was.

I managed to choke out words.

"Cold... Stay... Here... Night..."

"... To death!"

Someone picked me up. I watched hazily as we started running away from the hatch.

"No..." I croaked, dehydrated. "Dakota... An hour..."

"... Stay here."

"... Pneumonia or something."

"She said..."

"Fine..."

My vision sharpened for a second to see Julio.

"Rest..."

So I did.

Hey dere! Sadie here!

IM SORRYYYYYY

Devon was gonna stay but I decided to have him go with Jay so that's good, right?

I'm sorry I haven't been publishing lately, I had sudden inspiration for this one, though.
