"Ita!-...chi..." Sasuke bolted upright, catching his breath as he yelled out that name, words slowly fading as he realized where he was. Naruto sat up next to him, woken up by his scream. He looked at Sasuke, shivering and sweating with tears in his eyes. He wrapped his arms around Sasuke and they sat like that until he was calm again.
"How long was I out for?" Sasuke finally asked.
"Almost a day, I think. You didn't wake up once between now and when Orochimaru attacked us. Sakura carried you with us and we settled down here." Naruto pulled open the front of the tent and crawled out, gesturing for Sasuke to do the same. The sky was dark, the only light was from the campfire between the circle of tents.
"What's wrong? What happened?" Yamato asked, having heard Sasuke.
"Nightmares..." Sasuke muttered.
Naruto and Sasuke sat down by the fire and Sasuke warmed his hands, "Who's... Itachi..?"
Yamato looked over, "He was a S-class rogue nin of the leaf. I suggest you ask Kakashi when he wakes up, he knew Itachi before."
Sasuke looked to the man sleeping on a log by the fire with a book by his face, "Alright." He nodded.
Naruto sat there whispering in conversation with Yamato until sunrise when the rest of the group started to stir. Sai was first to get up and sat right next to Naruto by the dying fire, "I see you two were awake for awhile." Naruto's yawn was enough of a response. Sasuke had fallen back asleep on Naruto's shoulder and he didn't want to wake him so Naruto forced himself to stay awake the whole night.
Sakura got up and immediately lied down on Sasuke and tried to sleep again, Naruto didn't enjoy the extra weight but it was nice to feel like they loved him.
Sakura joined in on his conversation with Yamato and Sai, talking until Kakashi finally woke up, about two hours later. Naruto nudged Sasuke awake and they ate breakfast on the move.
"Kakashi? What do you know about Itachi?" Sasuke walked up next to him.
"Well... He was a good friend of mine, and your elder brother."
Sakura run up next to them and looked up at Kakashi with wide eyes, gesturing for him to shut up.
Kakashi continued, "He went rogue when you were only 5 and no one's seen him since, except the person who killed him."
"Are you trying to get him to go rogue again!?" Sakura whispered to him.
Kakashi looked over at her, "If Orochimaru said he won't remember, then he won't. I'm fairly certain he's the reason Sasuke has no memory." He looked back at Sasuke, who stared wide-eyed at the ground.
"I had a dream about him, and when I woke up I was screaming his name... How could I have a dream about the brother I don't remember?" Sasuke muttered to them.
"You used to be really close with your brother, you never left his side as a kid so it's possible your love for him never left your mind. Maybe that's a small piece of memory even Orochimaru couldn't erase."
Sasuke was silent for a long time, the only sound was Naruto and Sai talking behind them.
"How... Did he die?"
"You." Kakashi responded, blatantly, "You spent your whole life despising him for killing your family, you wanted to be a ninja so you could get revenge."
"What the fuck Kakashi!?" Sakura finally screamed at him, "How is this going to help in any way!?"
Yamato looked on with concern but added nothing. Naruto and Sai were staring at Sakura, silent so they wouldn't get hit.
"I-I killed him..?" Sasuke's voice was barely audible.
"Yes, you killed your brother. You ran off with Orochimaru, another rogue of the leaf, when you were 12 and trained with him for almost 3 years. Then we heard you had joined the Akatsuki, killed Itachi, we were sent after you and you tried to kill both me and Sakura. You fought Naruto multiple times as he went after you."
Kakashi paused in thought, "You made dozens of terrible decisions before we found you on the beach. We were supposed to kill you, but we didn't. Sakura cried over you for days when you left the village and Naruto trained harder than ever to be able to bring you back one day. Naruto never stopped trying to chase you and make you see that Itachi didn't control your life. Naruto believed for all those years that you would come back one day, and although we didn't expect it to be like this, he didn't stop smiling for days even while you were in the hospital unconscious or when lady Tsunade was interrogating you. Naruto knew that everything was going to be okay now that you were back."
Sakura was trying to cover Kakashi's mouth and make him stop talking but she couldn't.
"W-why... Why would I try to kill you and Sakura? Why would I have ever tried to hurt Naruto, why- ...did my brother kill the clan?" Sasuke couldn't control the way his voice peaked talking about Naruto and Sakura.
"Sasuke, you were practically raised around pain and death. You never talked to anyone and let yourself dwell on the past. You refused to move on and Orochimaru understood that, you were drawn to him and his power. If you had looked for help in others you never would have done any of this and you'd still have your memory." Kakashi looked down at Sasuke, but couldn't see his face, "I believe, now that you know this, the past won't repeat itself. As long as you understand that we can help you, and what happened before doesn't define your life now. As for what happened with Itachi... And your clan... I don't think anyone knows why he did it, but it's best that he's gone even if there was still people who loved him."
Sasuke didn't say a word, he didn't cry, he didn't do anything. They just kept walking in silence. Sakura moved past Kakashi to stand next to Sasuke, and she held his hand gently, rubbing circles on his palm, soothing him.

Author's note,
Yes I know that's not exactly how it went in the show, with Sasuke leaving Orochimaru and not killing him in this and whatever else you want to point out. I made some changes to the story so it would fit my plot. It's fine, were calm. Lol
