Corner after corner, step after step. That was all you could see, all you could let yourself think about as you ran. If you paused to consider what you were doing for even half a second, you knew that you would end up freezing. There was simply too much at risk, the stakes were so high that they would give you vertigo if you even thought about them. So if you wanted even the smallest chance of succeeding, of making all you had risked worth it, you could only focus on running. Any distraction, no matter how small, would end up dooming you.
Rushing through the darkened streets, sharply turning corners and circling around whenever possible in an attempt to throw off your pursuer, you panted heavily. You had no idea how long you had been running, but however long it had been, it was beginning to wear on you. Even though you kept pushing yourself forward, you felt the growing ache of your legs and the building burn in your lungs. In all honesty, it probably didn't help that you had spent around the last month holed up in one room. But that was exactly why you were running so desperately now. All of those sorrowful thoughts and bitter memories were just background noise though as you ran. They provided a lurking threat to motivate you, nothing more or they would threaten to overtake you completely.
So it was thinking of nothing but what was directly in front of you that you placed one foot in front of the other, step by step until you felt yourself grabbed firmly around your waist. You hardly even had time to struggle before Astro had scooped you up into arms, his hands clenched too tightly around you for you to put up any sort of fight. Besides, you were far too exhausted at this point to make that kind of effort. All you could do as Astro carried you back through the empty streets was watch him. His mouth was set in a stony frown, his brown eyes distant as the thoughts in his head churned. The sight made you shrink instinctively into his arms, whatever he was thinking, you were sure that it spelled nothing good for you. Exhausted and despondent, sluggish tears began to drip down your face, mourning the fact that you had lost your one chance at escape. You had done everything you could have to succeed, you had manipulated and submitted, lied and bided your time, and still, it had all been useless.
When you were finally returned to your homey prison, some time had passed, but you were still crying. As Astro set you down on the bed, sitting on the edge immediately after, you started shaking violently, afraid of what he would do. The most he had ever done to you previously was grab you too hard, leaving a few finger-shaped bruises but nothing more. But you knew he was capable of doing so much more.
"Sweetheart," Astro whispered, reaching over to caress your cheek, only pausing slightly when you flinched. "Are you alright? Are you hurt?"
"N-No," You stammered, still bracing yourself for the inevitable punishment. At your answer, Astro suddenly leaped forward, and you jerked backwards, hitting your head on the wall. But he didn't pin you down or hit you, nothing you had been expecting. Rather, Astro simply enveloped you in a firm hug, not so tight as to be uncomfortable, but somehow making you feel strangely secure.
"I was so scared! I came home but you weren't here!" He mumbled distressingly into your ear. "I'm so sorry!"
"You're- You're sorry?"
"Yes," Astro said, nodding in response. "It's my job to protect you, to keep you safe, and I can't even keep our home secure! I can't even blame you for wandering, you must have been so scared when you saw that you weren't safe here like I promised you would be. And I wasn't there to help you, no wonder you got lost! You must have been so scared, so confused without me here." You weren't sure what to say to that, what could you say? Astro seemed to perceive this whole thing as a pet wandering outside and getting lost as soon as someone left a door open.
"It's okay," you forced out, figuring that this was better than the alternative. After all, at least with this delusion, it would be easier to try to escape again. As much as it killed you to have your humanity and agency further stripped from you like this, you could deal with it if it helped you in the long run.
"No, it's not," Astro answered solemnly. "You could have been seriously hurt, all because I wasn't careful enough." Sliding off of the bed, Astro stood and exited the room, making sure he closed the door behind him. He didn't lock it though, leading you to think that he was coming back, even as you heard him moving and shuffling some things around outside. He did come back, though, he wasn't empty-handed when he returned.
No, in his hands he held a thick metal chain, one both long and sturdy. Eyes widening at the sight, you tried to move away as Astro approached, but he quickly grabbed your ankle before you could get far. Gently, almost lovingly, he shackled one end of the chain around your ankle, giving it a few tugs to make sure it was secure. It must have passed the test, for he then left your side to attach the other, much more narrow shackle to the iron rod at the end of your bed frame. Dimly you noted that the chain was fairly long, at least long enough for you to reach the bathroom that sat near your bed, though it wasn't nearly long enough for you to reach the bedroom door or the small window in the upper corner of the room. Heartbreak in your eyes, you turned back to Astro, who was smiling proudly.
"I promise that I won't let that happen ever again."
