It's been a few days since Makoto woke up from the nightmare next to a flaming candle but he hasn't mentioned it to anyone, he was worried that people wouldn't believe him when he said that he made sure to blow out the candle before sleeping.
The amount of nightmares Makoto has been having has fueled his curiosity for wanting to know everything that happened. There was one other person involved and that was Firefighter Dex Andrews. "Hey, Leon?" Makoto asked from his spot watching work on the sink in the kitchen, lately, Will has gotten a part-time job to support the family when he isn't watching Eugene or Jesse.
"Yeah, kid?"
Makoto played with his fingers taking a deep breath. "Did anything strange happen during the fire?" Makoto wanted to try to ask Leon straight up before he tried to find Dex Andrews because the whole time Makoto has known Leon he's never lied to him.
He heard Leon suck in a sharp breath before scooting out from under the sink narrowly missing banging his head on the cabinet. "Um, what do you mean?" Leon grabs a paper towel and wipes his hands turning on the sink cheering when it ran water again.
"Leon, why is the science classroom finished? It was like it never happened."
Leon chuckles tossing the paper towel in the trash. "Good remodel job I guess." Makoto shook his head, he was getting frustrated with Leon. "No it's not a good remodel job, I was in a coma for a week while the science lab looks like nothing happened to it. Something happened during the fire, something happened to me. You guys call it plastic surgery but it's not because no one is this good, it looks like nothing happened but you didn't smell burning flesh I did."
Makoto huffed and grabbed the keys to his car that were hanging on the keyring, he recently got the okay from Will saying he can drive again but he hasn't been in the car since the accident.
His phone vibrated he glanced down to see it was a text from Leon, he saw Leon at the doorway looking worried.Huffing he sent a text so that Leon wouldn't be worried and drove, Makoto didn't really know where he was going but he needed answers and somehow he was going to get them. He tightened his hands around the steering wheel, slowing down when he got to a stoplight he checked his phone to make sure he didn't get another text from Leon. Makoto was surprised that he didn't instead he had a text from Eugene.
Makoto smiled as he texted Eugene back, he's started to get the feelings that he buried for Eugene back but he doesn't know if he should try to act on them because last time he did they almost kissed but Eugene was still grieving and Makoto sure isn't going to make Eugene speed up the process.
The light turned green so Makoto put his phone down, he didn't realize where he was until he automatically pulled into the Midtown Fire Department. "Oh," Makoto whispered to himself, he felt his cheeks heat up with shame. It seemed his subconscious took him here to see if Dex Andrews worked here.
Makoto sat in his car for a few minutes debating if he should go in when a knock made him jump, he turned to see a man standing beside his car he saw the name on his shirt say Andrews which told Makoto the world made his decision for him and he couldn't back out now.
Makoto rubbed his face before rolling the window down. "Hi, um I'm Makoto. You saved from the fire at the school a month or so ago." Dex snapped his fingers as he remembered where he knew the kid from. "Right, what are you doing here?"
Makoto gulped suddenly nervous. "I wanted to talk about the fire, could we talk somewhere private?" Dex nodded his head towards the passenger seat. "Can we talk in your car? Not very private in my station, they're very nosey." Dex chuckles but walks towards the passenger side when Makoto unlocks the door after nodding.
"What do you want to know kid?"
Makoto wiped his hands on his pants which suddenly turned sweaty at the fact he might get the answers he needed today. "Was there anything strange about the fire?"
Dex tilted his head looking at Makoto confused. "Like was it arson?" Makoto shook his head. "I mean like, I remember everything right? I remember the burning of my flesh and the burning of my hair but when I went back to school it was like nothing happened. They also said I had plastic surgery but I would have scars from that but I have none. I just want to know what happened to me."
Dex pursed his lips together thinking before he could say anything Makoto interjected. "Please don't lie, my family lied to me I know they're hiding something but I want to know the truth."
Dex's shoulders slumped in defeat. "The fire was strange, when I got there it was like you consumed the fire. After we got you out and we started to put the fire out the room was fine, it didn't have any burn marks or any proof that the fire happened." Makoto's mouth opened in shock, he was torn he was happy that someone validated his feelings and told him the truth but on the other hand he didn't know how that was possible.
"How- How is that possible?"
Dex looked out the window before opening the door and grabbing something out of his pocket. "It's only happened one other time, here. Go to this address tomorrow at 3 pm and I'll tell you the full truth." Dex handed Makoto the card just in time for the alarm to blare which meant that Dex had to go.
"Thank you!" Makoto yelled just in time for Dex to slam the car door to run to put his uniform on, Makoto huffed and grabbed his phone typing in the address to see where he had to go.
His eyes widened when the address led him to the Avengers Compound, it looked like Makoto might have to sneak out again.
