Makoto was excited, he was taking Eugene and Jesse out for an early birthday picnic for Eugene considering Rosie and Harrison were planning a birthday trip which was more for the parents than Eugene as sad as it was it gave Makoto the chance to do something special for him. "Hey, are you almost ready? Eugene said he's at the park with Jesse." Eugene had asked Makoto if they could meet each other instead of Eugene trying to come up with an excuse for how Makoto knew Eugene so it just worked for everyone.
"Oh yea, I'm ready." Makoto smiles as he looks at himself in the mirror, he fixes the shell necklace he has on before straightening his shirt from the wrinkles and walks out of his room shutting the door behind him. "You look nice, he'll like it." Will pats him on the shoulder before gesturing towards the door, the park was within walking distance for Makoto so he planned on just walking so he can save gas.
He grabbed the picnic basket that he had prepared on the table, he slipped on his shoes before opening the door. "Have fun, text me when you get there," Will says as Makoto slips out the door, he replies before he can shut the door fully. "I will, have a good day." Makoto shakes his head fondly as he closes the door behind him.
Makoto pockets his phone and walks down the walkway, he looks around as he's walking he watches as the cars drive by. He finds his mind wandering to what they're doing but he doesn't dwell on it long because his mind is filled with Eugene's face. This time next year Makoto can see the two of them either still living with his uncles or getting their own small place big enough for the three of them, and maybe Jesse can convince Eugene to get a pet that they never got to have growing up.
He smiles when he sees Jesse and Eugene sitting on a blanket, Makoto can't see their faces but he knows they're happy because how can they not be, today was going to be a good day and that was because Makoto was going to make it so. As he got closer he could see the smiles on their faces, so Makoto was right they were happy.
"Hey, guys," Makoto said once he got close enough that he knew they would hear him. "Oh hey Makoto, thanks for letting me stick along." Jesse smiled reaching for the picnic basket which he happily handed over, over the last year Jesse has grown up to be a mature 15-year-old so far. "Oh nice you brought takis and Yakult, you know the way to my heart," Jesse says as soon as she opens the basket.
Makoto chuckles his head fondly and sits next to Eugene who kisses him on the lips, it was short but sweet nonetheless. "Happy almost birthday babe," Makoto says once they pull apart. "Thank you Koto, and thank you for doing this. I told Harrison and Mom that I was taking Jesse on a picnic and they didn't care. Just as long as I was back before dark." Eugene rolls his eyes but Makoto can see he's grateful to be away from them even if it's for only a short amount of time.
He pulls the picnic away from Jesse who protests a little bit but the protests stop when Makoto grabs the plates that are in the bottom of the basket, Makoto grabs the silverware before he starts to portion out the sandwiches and salad that he made. He hands Eugene one of the Yakult's who smiles before opening the top and sipping it lightly. "You always know the way to my heart," Eugene says cheesily making Makoto chuckle shaking his head fondly.
Makoto follows everyone's lead and takes a bite of the sandwich which was turkey and cheese but it was toasted so it tasted good with everything. Makoto brought a forkful of the salad up to his mouth and took a bite of the crunchy lettuce. "So are you excited to turn 18?" Makoto asks raising an eyebrow at Eugene. "I am, I can't wait to get out with Jesse." Makoto's eyes go wide as he looks at Jesse who was paying attention to something on her phone.
"She knows, I ended up telling her because I think it was time she knew about it." Makoto gives him an understanding smile but he looked away when he knew it was turning sad, he wished that Eugene wouldn't have had to do this. "Hey, I got you right? Always and forever." Eugene leans over and kisses Makoto on the cheek. "Always and forever." Makoto reached over and entwined his pinky with Eugene's making him smile, Eugene brought their joined pinkies up to his lips and he kissed them softly.
"Keep it PG." Makoto chuckled breaking his pinky away from Eugene, Eugene rolled his eyes he opened his mouth to say something but a car alarm cut him off, then it was another one. "What the?" Eugene says standing up, Makoto gasps when he sees it. Eugene's was fading away somehow. "Makoto, I'm scared." Eugene looked at Makoto panicked, Makoto opened his mouth to reply but he was too late because Euegene faded away but not before he sent a glance to Jesse who looked afraid.
That's when Makoto felt it, it was like slowly he was losing his organs one by one. "Oh god, Jesse. I know you are scared but go back home and tell them what alright?" Makoto gathered enough strength to grab Jesse's hands to make her look into his eyes. Jesse gasped but nodded quickly. "Please don't leave me alone," Jesse says grabbing onto Makoto's hands which were now starting to fade away.
"I'm sorry," Makoto whispers before closing his eyes, it felt like he was falling before he felt a cold surface. He opened his eyes to see the one person he hasn't seen in a long time. "Mom?"
