Shortly, Katherine lied back in the summer sun and worked on a tan with Beverly.
The boys stared at both girls sometimes taking shifts to stare at one or the other. They were never used to seeing Katherine this way despite being friends for years, mostly because Katherine was just naturally beautiful and earned stares from all the boys at school. She was just the entrancing and the boys just couldn't look away.
When Bev turned her head lazily to look at the boys, they all looked away from the girls awkwardly.
Richie noisily began to look through Ben's backpack and said, "News flash, Ben, School's out for summa."
This caused Katherine to sit up, balancing her sunglasses on the tip of her nose as Ben said, "Oh that, that's not school stuff."
Richie pulled out a postcard. "Who sent you this?"
"No one," Ben replied, grabbing the postcard back.
Richie pulled out a folder opening it and Eddie saw what was inside and asked, "What's with the history project?"
Ben jumped into an explanation. "Oh well, when I first moved here, I really didn't have anyone to hang out with so," Richie passed the folder to Bill. "I just started spending time in the library."
"You went to the library? On purpose?" Richie scoffed.
"People do that, you know, Rich," Katherine said standing up and sitting next to Bill to look over his shoulder at the folder.
"Yeah, the nerds and weirdos do, Kitty-Kat," Richie replied.
Katherine just rolled her eyes in response as Beverly also stood sitting beside Katherine. "I wanna see."
Katherine reached over and flipped a paper over, seeing a building being burnt down. "Hey, does anyone know what the Black Spot is?" she asked.
"The Black Spot was a nightclub that was burned down years ago by that racist cult," Eddie explained.
As she leaned closer to Bill to get a better look at the rest of the clippings, the boy looked into Katherine's shining blue eyes that held a spark of interest, he noticed that it made her eyes seem like the ocean-a tidal wave
that he could actually get lost in.When she noticed his gaze, their eyes met to which she just smiled kindly at him.
"The what?" Stan questioned Eddie.
"Don't you watch Geraldo?" Eddie replied.
Katherine turned to Beverly as Bill handed her the folder. It was then that she noticed Beverly had cut her hair short than the last time she saw her. It suits her. "Bev," Katherine spoke with a smile. "Your hair is...wow."
"Your hair looks beautiful. Beverly," Ben added.
The redhead reached up and ran a hand through her hair. "Oh, hey thanks."
"Wish I could pull that style off," Katherine told Beverly, making the girl chuckle. "I'm serious. It's badass."
"Why's it all murders and missing kids?" Richie asked Ben.
"Derry's not like any town I've ever been in before," Ben said. "They did a study once and it turns out people die or disappear six times the national average."
"You read that?" Beverly asked.
Ben nodded. "And that's just grown-ups. Kids are worse. Way, way worse."
"That's great to hear as a kid in this town," Katherine remarked.
"Sorry," Ben told her for possibly scaring her but he told the others. "I've got more stuff if you want to see it."
