Shadow's P.O.V.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~7 year ago~
I woke up in the middle of the night in the den. Cinder was fast asleep in her bed, and Shade was asleep in his. I was a little curious, so I crawled out of my bed and walked out of the den. Looking around outside, I saw the shadows of a border patrol coming back and changing into their human forms. I smiled at the thought of me soon being able to change into my wolf self. A laughter was heard for me, it was quiet, but just faint enough to hear it. I knew that I was too young to leave without a guide from my brother or even someone else who was able to change into their wolf forms at night for being eighteen. Running out of camp, I hoped that I went unnoticed by anyone. Finally in the trees, I skulked around, listening to the laughter getting louder when I realized, it sounded like my father Dark's laughter. Finally I saw him in a clearing and I kept myself hidden in the brambles. He seemed to laugh evilly while looking up to the half moon. "Finally! Now that I know Cinder isn't going to be the next moon spirit, I know that I will meet her in battle!" He yelled out. He was talking about Kiba! But why would he? I continued to listen to him.
"When I finally find the girl, I will get rid of this weak, pathetic, body of Dark's and use the power of the wolf against Tsukakari, so that we will be evenly matched! I will hunt down whoever the next moon spirit is, and kill her when we finally meet! I Zalgo declare it!!" He shouted. I bent my ears down and kept my tail down from the shock of what he was saying! If he wasn't my real father, then what really happened that day when he came back injured?
I ran back home, not caring if anyone heard me.
The next morning, father, or should I say Zalgo, called a meeting. I felt the hatred in my heart for what that monster did to me and my siblings. "I will be taking a group of the best hunters to help me look for the girl." He stated. Panic quickly took over my emotions; I couldn't let him find Kiba, he'd kill her! I don't know what caused me to do this, but I stepped forward and looked up at him. "I volunteer to help you father!" I blurted out. Everyone in the tribe looked over at me, including my siblings, shock and nervousness clear on their faces. Cinder looked up at me then at Zalgo, still in the disguise of my father in his human form, as he stepped up to me. "So, my son wishes to join us!" He declared. Most of the others in the tribe cheered, especially Kana, a girl who was my age with red ears, hair, and tail. I put on a brave face and waved to everyone, praying that somehow, Kiba would be safe in all of this.
That night, I packed what clothes I needed and put them in my backpack. "Big job for a pup don't you think?" I heard behind me. I turned around to see Shade. His dark gray tail swished as he walked over to me. "You know I don't like when you call me that." I mumbled to him under my breath. He chuckled and ruffled my hair, picking up his crossbow and some arrows from under his bed. I wondered why he needed them.
"You didn't think I'd let you go alone with father and the other hunters do you?"
"You're coming with us, Shade? But I thought--"
"I know I know. Future alpha, leaving with his little brother and father and the best hunters in our tribe to go look for a girl who may be impossible to find if you're not in her tribe?" He looked at me. "I know that. But I also know you'll need a guiding hand since we might be gone for a few years. These types of tracings take time, and if we are out there for a while, you'd need someone to help make sure that you're safe." He said.
I nodded and decided not to argue with him anymore than I might need to later. "Besides Shadow, my mate Aurora said she'd look after Cinder and the rest of the tribe while we where gone." Aurora was Shade's mate, and all of the other males where not happy when she gave her heart to Shade; and I can see why. She was beautiful, Snow white hair, ears, tail, and striking blue eyes. I got back to reality when I remembered that I was found to be gone for years! What would she do when I told her? Would she hate me, or worse, not want to be my friend anymore? I sat on my bed and bent my ears down, looking at the ground. I felt the bed dip down next to me as a dark gray tail was wrapped around my shoulder; a sign of compassion for us in the wolf tribe. I looked up seeing Shade next to me as he pulled me in for a comforting hug. I hugged him back.
The next day, I waited by the lake for Kiba, in our secret meeting spot. Questions raced in my head about how she would react to what I would tell her. I heard footsteps of someone running over to me. I looked up and smiled when I saw Kiba, but quickly remembered what I needed to say once she caught up to me. "What's wrong Shadow?" She asked. I looked at the ground, an uncomfortable feeling of regret filled my heart. "Kiba... I'm sorry.... I can't play with you for a while..." I said, sounding and feeling hurt from what I was doing. She looked at me, her expression was in shock. Why do I have to say these things to her? Why not the truth? "Why not Shadow? What am I going to do without coming to the lake to play with you? I'll be bored and upset without you." She said raising her voice slightly. "Kiba, I'm doing this to protect you." I said taking her hand. "You'll thank me someday." And with that, I turned around and left her. I felt tears filling my eyes and running down my cheeks as I ran back home to the tribe, away from my best friend. I'm so sorry Kiba...
~4 years later~
I had finally turned sixteen, and Zalgo seemed to be giving up on the search for Kiba, and I couldn't have been more relived. All of us could finally go home to see our families and our friends. I had grown and hit puberty over the years. Deepening voice, muscles in my arms, legs, and everything in between. Shade was very helpful for me when we would practice hunting for pray and when I outgrew my old clothes. Everyday on our missions, I would be sure to lead Zalgo farther and farther away from Kiba. Knowing eventually, he would know that she was nowhere to be found. I was proud I was able to get him away from her as soon as I could.
We all finally got to the camp, and all of us where welcomed home as if we where returning heroes, despite we never found what we all where meant to look for. Shade and Aurora hugged one another when he made it into the clearing. "Shadow. Come with me." I heard behind me as the black furred wolf, shifted into his human form to create the monster still passing to the tribe as my father. I nodded and followed him. He entered the den and I followed him inside. "Shadow, since you're turning out to be an excellent hunter for the tribe, I'm sending you on your first solo hunting mission." He said. I was proud of myself, my first hunting mission by myself, and I could finally see Kiba again!
~present~
I learned a long time ago that my father was killed, and I vowed that I would make him and my mother proud by avenging them in the battle that was to come.
I looked to my side to see Kiba sleeping soundly in our bed. I smiled and decided not to let my memories haunt me again. And why would I? I had a beautiful wife, a life away from Zalgo and the tribe, and I wouldn't replace anything that I have now.
