I wake up early the next mourning to the sound of banging on my door. I close my eyes, trying to savor the last second of sleep, before Danny whips open the door. She comes over, clearly relieved she doesn't have to wake me up.
"Is it time to practice?" I ask, yawning. I don't have a clock in my room to check.
"Yes and no." Danny states, rubbing her hands on her skinny jeans. She looks nervous, if that's even possible for her. As a study her face more, she also looks paler than usual.
"Are you okay?" I question, sitting up straight to talk to her.
"Yeah." Danny says, but it's an unsure answer. She takes a deep breath. "Can I tell you something?"
I nod, not sure what this is about. Danny gulps, and I know this isn't good.
"Well," Danny says, her grey eyes glued to the sheets of my bed. "I trust you. More than the others, for some reason. Which is weird because you just got here. And I need to talk to someone about my past."
My brain goes back to the death glare Danny gave Cat upon her saying you can call me Simon. "Shoot." I say, looking her straight in the face. "I won't tell a soul."
"Um, okay." Danny takes another shaky breath. "I had an, um, interesting childhood. When I was five, my mother and father died, leaving me to take care of my two year old sister Carolyn. We wandered the streets, me trying to get jobs to buy food and Carolyn singing on the streets when she got older. By the time I was nine and she was six, we had lived in a small abandoned church for years. One night when we were sleeping, the Church had a fire downstairs. I awoke Carolyn, gave her the supplies and told her to run and that I would meet her by our favorite spot, the brook. I tried to catch who started the fire, but was caught by the police. They sent me to an orphanage in Virginia. I have never seen my sister since, and have been looking for her ever since I escaped when I was thirteen, the year I joined the group and the year the whole gang shit started."
I am speechless. I knew Danny was strong, but she has lived on her own since she was five. Danny runs her fingers through her dirty blonde hair nervously.
"How did you join the group?" I ask before I can stop myself.
Danny smiles as her eyes go to a far off place. "I almost killed Fabian."
"What?"
"Yeah, it was pretty funny actually. I was hiding behind a bucket when Fabian, Cal and Bo came down the alley. Bo said he saw someone move, obviously me. Fabian called out for me to show myself, and I didn't, because that would be stupid, so I sat there, waiting, with Ellen in my hand-"
"Ellen?" I cut her off, confused.
"Ellen's my sword."
"Oh?"
"Anyway, I was waiting with Ellen in my hand until he got at the right moment, then I pounced like a lion and man tackled him to the ground. I think I might've punched Bo somewhere in there, too. So yeah, that's how I met them. After that Cal betrayed us and you know the rest."
"So you won your way into the group by almost killing the leader."
"Yeah pretty much." Danny answers, with a short laugh. "And, um thanks for listening, Julian."
I smile. "Anytime, Danny."
