"Interesante. . ."
I anxiously bit my thumbnail, both Rowan and I watching Amaya as she studied the undecipherable note.
"Did anyone question you?" I asked Amaya.
"We were all curious as to where you went but I'm sure you'll inform them." She said, continuing to study the note.
At me and Rowan's silence, Amaya looked up. "You are planning on telling them, right?"
"This is Rowan's secret, not ours. It isn't detrimental to our mission, so no. This will remain between the three of us." I tell her firmly. She gave a nod, obeying her orders.
After some moments more of looking at the note, Amaya spoke.
"It's as if you tried to finish what you were writing. I can tell by the pencil marks where the blanks are that you truly did try to complete the note." She said.
"Do you have any idea why I didn't?" Rowan asked.
"Well, I do agree with Athena about a telepath getting into your head but telepathy can be tricky. Mastering control over someone's thoughts and actions takes a lot of time and practice so whoever did this to you knew exactly what they were doing."
"If they perfected their ability, then why did my writing turn out like this?"
Amaya didn't speak for a few seconds, the wheels in her intelligent head turning until her mood brightened.
"Distance." She stated, sure of her answer. "Whoever got into your head couldn't effectively complete their message because of the distance. With the skill they have being able to simultaneously control body and mind, they'd easily be able to have you complete the note but not if they weren't close enough to fully grasp the entirety of your mind." She finished.
That actually makes a lot of sense.
"Okay," Rowan started, knawing on her lip. "How far is too far for a telepath? Where could they have been? And why me out of everyone they could have chosen to write?"
Amaya shrugged, "Although I can figure it out with time if you want a faster answer you are better off asking someone who understands." She said softly, giving Rowan a knowing look.
"Absolutely not." She said.
"Who better to educate you on telepaths then Xavier?" Amaya asked. Rowan shook her head, while Amaya only sighed.
"Wait," I said. "You don't necessarily have to tell him anything about the note. Just asked about his powers."
"Because that wouldn't be suspicious at all," Rowan said in a flat tone.
"Well do you want to know or not?"
"Ugh," She put her face in her hands. "I should have kept this whole thing to myself."
"Look," Amaya took Rowan's hands giving her a small smile. "I'm glad you told us. You said that you felt desperate while writing the note, yeah?"
Rowan nodded.
"Well, those weren't your feelings or thoughts. Whoever made you do this was feeling desperate. Meaning they need us. Something is wrong, therefore we need to help whoever is behind this." Amaya said, giving us a determined stare.
"Besides," She continued. "This is only the beginning."
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Four pieces... this note is number one."
"So, I'll be writing more?" Rowan asked worriedly.
"Possibly," Amaya replied.
I took a second to understand everything before nodding, "I guess you're right."
