It's nearing the time that Amaya and I have to meet up with Rowan and I'm dreading it. I know we have to tell her about the note and our suspicions about Elias and what he may know, but Rowan is unpredictable. I don't know what she'll do once she knows.
Xavier is also on my mind and with everything going on, I'm questioning whether it was right to send him and one of my own on their mission.
"What do you think she'll say?" Amaya asked me, pulling me from my thoughts.
I shrugged, "Probably I told you so." I chuckled humorlessly.
Amaya placed a hand on my shoulder, "I'm almost certain that whatever he's hiding is only to protect you, Athena."
I smiled at her caring attitude, but that didn't stop my internal jitters. Yes, I am upset with Elias right now, but I would never want anything to happen to him. I wish he'd be more open and honest with me, preferably very fast so no one has to deal with the wrath of Rowan.
Once Amaya and I arrived at our meeting place, Rowan quickly let us in and we got right to it.
Amaya's leg bounced while I pulled out the note from my pocket, opening it slowly.
"What's that?" Rowan asked, staring at the paper.
"Something I found in my journal that I wrote a few weeks ago, long before we knew anything about Vinco," I told her.
Handing her the note, I waited for her reaction. I waited for anger or rage to fill my body but neither of those emotions was what I got, in fact, I received nothing from her.
"I don't know how to feel about this." She said quietly. "You. . . Do you think this is about Elias?"
I nodded, "I do."
She sighed and leaned back into the chair sat in seeming to be contemplating something. "I mean, it's obvious what we need to do."
"And what's that?" Amaya questioned.
Rowan scoffed softly, sitting straighter, "We need to question him of course. To reveal his secret is to reveal Vinco. Guys, the answer is in the note. Xavier can raid his mind and find what he's hiding no problem."
Except that is a problem seeing how Xavier isn't here and trying to find other information about Vinco aside from its location.
Besides, I don't appreciate how willing she is to just invade someone's mind. I know she sees Elias as less than because of his past, but that doesn't mean we disrespect him as a person and invade his privacy.
"I do agree with you about the questioning, eventually. But intruding on his private thoughts and sifting through his life is where I cross a line." I tell her firmly.
More and more I'm starting to realize that Rowan isn't the same person I met a couple of years ago though I can't really have an opinion since I never truly knew her to begin with. With what I'm learning so far is that you can tell she was once the Eversor. She is merciless and determined and she has a way of eventually getting what she wants.
"Athena, it's the only way-"
"No, it isn't," I cut her off, earning a glare from her. "I know Elias better than anyone, I can pry it out of him. I just need time."
"Time is something that we may or may not have based on what you've told me about this island. Our best bet is to place Elias in an interrogation room and get this info out of him the old fashioned way."
My jaw clenched at her suggestion, "Are you crazy? What is wrong with you?"
"Athena, all of us have suffered and sacrificed and now we're being threatened by people that we can't find. Elias has the information we need to stop bad people from doing bad things to our kind and to all supernaturals. Supernaturals like your family, my mate, my children and you're saying to give you time? Time that is uncertain, might I add."
