"I'm so sorry, Wakatoshi." You say softly as you hug him, tip-toeing since he was much taller than you. "You fought really well. I'm so proud."
He doesn't really hug you back since he doesn't know how to react. He lifts his arms than let them down, in a cycle.
"Thank you." He murmurs.
Finally, you pull away, a sad smile on your lips. "You should have been the one making it to the nationals."
"Karasuno made a great and unexpected performance. In this match they were better than us and deserved to win." He says calmly and you blink, confused.
"Well, all right, but don't you feel like you should've been the ones to win? You all trained so hard and it would be your last nationals. Plus, you're a top 3 national ace!" You point out.
"Me not going to this year won't change that." His calm tone was starting to get on your nerves.
"But volleyball! You love it and now you won't be able to display it in front of everyone."
"I'm planning on keep playing volleyball. I have already many requests from various universities and the V-league so that won't be an issue."
You look at him, perplexed. "Why aren't you showing any kind of reaction?!" You snap and Ushijima stares at you, an eyebrow lifted.
"I don't understand what you mean."
"I mean, everyone else would be angry or at least sad at the loss! They would shout or cry or kick something! Why aren't you doing anything like that!"
"I don't see any point in that. It's not like my volleyball career is over."
You curl your fists.
You knew him well, ever since you were children. You knew he was not the type to be overtaken by emotion, to be angry at pointless stuff - he always calm, stoic and hard to read.
You knew that and you liked him even then. But secretly, you had always wished he would show some emotion at something. Even if it wasn't you.
But not even with volleyball he did that so what hope for you could you expect?
"You're right. It's not over. Why mourn over something that's useless?" You tone turns sad and he noticed it.
"Is something wrong, (Y/N)?"
"No, everything is okay." You say slowly as you pick up the bag you had put in the floor. Only then you realize that Shiratorizawa's volleyball team had been watching you both.
"I'm gonna go. See you when I see you, Wakatoshi." You wave to him to the rest of the team as you give them words of understanding about their loss. At least some were sad.
When you leave, Tendou immediately approaches Ushijima.
"What are you thinking, man!"
"What do you mean?"
"(Y/N) obviously wanted some kind of reaction from you! Why didn't you have any?!"
"It's pointless. My career-"
"Your career is in the future! This is now and (Y/N) is the type of girl who likes reactions from people. You, better than anyone else, should know that."
"Why would she care about my reactions?" Wakatoshi asks, more confused than ever. "She never had problem with them before."
"That's because she likes you, you idiot!" Tendou yells. The other team members nod in agreement as they whisper to each other.
"It was kind of obvious."
"Why else would she always come to training?"
Ushijima didn't hear them, his mind replaying Tendou's words over and over.
"What?"

"(Y/N)!" Your mom calls from the door. "Someone is here to see you!"
You get up, curious about who might be. Your curious expression turns sober when you see him.
"Hello, (Y/N)." Wakatoshi greets and you force a smile.
"Hi."
"Please enter." Your mom says. "You can go to your room, my dear, if you want to talk alone." Without him seeing it, your mom winks at you. She had always shipped you with Wakatoshi.
You sigh. "Will it be quick?"
Ushijima nods, unpleased by your hurry. But as always, he did not show it.
"I want to apologize." He immediately says the second you close your room's door.
You frown. "Why? You did nothing wrong."
He takes a step closer to you. "My team members helped me to realized what I was doing wrong. You are the type of girl that likes reactions and I already knew that but..."
For the first time in your life, you saw Wakatoshi being at loss of words. It amused you. And suddenly, you realizes that you had been a bit of an idiot for getting mad at him.
"It's okay." You say softly, touching his arm. You tone was sincere. "That's just who you are. I was stupid for wanting you to be different. I like you for who you are. Plus, I think it's great you accept so well when something does not go your way." You smile.
His eyes widen slightly. "Like?"
"We're friends, aren't we?"
"Just friends?" He blurts out and you feel your cheeks heating.
"O-Of course! W-What else could we be?"
"Tendou said something about you having feel-"
You cover his mouth and with your hands before realizing what you had done and quickly retreat them. "Tendou should learn to shut up." You wave your hands in front of you, panicking. "I-I mean, he shouldn't go around telling silly things."
"Silly things? I don't think it's silly." He says, his face more serious than usual.
"Wha-What?"
"I'm not good at this kind of thing but..." He stretches out his hand to grab one of yours. You feel like you could faint. He was never like this.
"Do you want to go on a date with me?"
