"Who is that?" You ask Eiko, pointing discretely to one guy who was passing by, surrounded by girls.
"How do you not kn-" Eiko interrupts herself, giggling. "Oh, right, sometimes I forget that you just transferred two days ago, (Y/N)-chan. That is Oikawa Toru , the setter of the volleyball team. He's very popular in school."
What is a setter? You wonder. Maybe you would search it later.
"Well, but I guess you can see that." Eiko continues as she watched him and you do the same. Many girls were surrounding him, squealing and begging for a picture or giving him chocolate or asking for dates. Oikawa smiled, delicately refusing some things, accepting others.
"Ah, it must be good to have so many people to like you." Eiko comments as she rocks her legs back and forth on the bench. "Choice is something Oikawa certainly isn't missing."
"I don't know." You wonder aloud and Eiko looks at you. "I think he seems lonely."
"Lonely?" Eiko repeats, surprised. "He's Oikawa Toru."
You just nod, watching the setter. He lifts his head to watch his surroundings and your eyes meet for the first time. His smile dropped for a second when that happened before smiling brightly to his fans again.
You sigh, seeing the story repeat all over again.
*
You were walking home after Eiko had forced you to watch the volleyball's practice. You were only the school for two days but it was obvious that she had a crush on Iwaizumi. And you complied happily, since you liked to learn new things and you knew nothing about volleyball.
"Oiii!" A voice calls and you stop, turning around. Oikawa ran up to catch up with you. "Hi!" He greets with a charming smile; you blink at him. "I'm sorry for startling you like this but I thought that it would be a good idea to walk home together. "
"Why? We don't know each other." You say calmly as you start walking again.
Oikawa accompanied you. "Well, but we can change that! My name is Oikawa Toru."
"I know."
Silence.
"And yours?" Oikawa asks, a bit surprised that weren't doing any effort to talk with him.
"(L/N) (Y/N)."
"Oh, (Y/N)-chan, what a pre-"
"I didn't give you permission to use my first name." You say, gazing at him. Your voice showed no hate, not discomfort, no dislike, no rudeness. You were simply saying facts.
Oikawa blinks at you, shocked to see someone talking with him so boldly. Especially a girl.
"Well, I'm sorry if I have offended you, (Y/N)-ch... (L/N)-san." He corrects himself and you hold back a smile.
"I used to be like you, you know?" You say out of nowhere and Oikawa gazes at you, confused.
"What do you mean?"
"In my previous school, I was one of the most popular girls. Every day boys confessed to me, I was surrounded by people wanting to be my friends. And do you know why?"
Oikawa shakes his head, wondering what you were trying to say. "Because I wasn't being myself." You say, smiling at the memory with a bit of sadness.
"I tried hard to maintain that facade because I wanted people to like me - I didn't care if I was a fake. But... my mother made me realize that wasn't the way to make true friends. She was always a guiding light to me."
"Was?" Oikawa asks softly.
"She passed ay two years ago."
"I'm sorry." He says and you shake your head.
"My mother was one of the best people I know. She was always there for me and gave me advice when she knew I wasn't doing things right. So, when she passed, I decide to start being myself, like she wanted. And, damn, it was refreshing!" You say as you jump and swirl in the middle of the street, a bright smile on your lips.
Oikawa watches you, amazed. Never in his life had he met someone so... themselves.
"I started saying the truth, what I honestly thought. And you know what happened? Suddenly, I wasn't popular anymore!" You fake a pout before laughing. "And that felt so good! All those people were just as fake as me and I'm so glad that they went away. I was able to make true friends who truly liked me."
"Why are you telling me this?"
"I already told you." You say as you flick his forehead. You had to be in your tip toes to do that. "Because you remind me of my past self."
"I don't fake who I am." He argues, folding his arms.
"You do." You smile mysteriously. "I saw it during that match, the look you had. You are someone who likes to be the best and have control over things. And you pretend that you have that so nice personality."
"Are you saying I'm not nice?"
You shake your head. "No, I believe you are kind and a good person. However, you work too hard to be always nice to everyone. When was the last time that you just refused something straightforwardly? That you just said 'no' to something without explaining yourself?"
Oikawa's eyes widen, as if you had questioned his very core.
"I... I-"
"You are true when you are with your friends, anyone can see that." You say as you place a hand on his chest. Oikawa's eyes widen even more. "But when you are with those girls... You are a fake."
With those words, you turned on your heels and left, leaving Oikawa with nothing but his thoughts and your words on his mind.
*
"Oikawa-san!" The fans exclaim once again when they see him. In a matter of seconds, he was once again surrounded. "Please, go on a date with me!"
"No, with me!" Another one said.
"Please, accept this chocolates!"
Your words echoed in his mind and he found himself getting annoyed by the girls. And he realized that he had always felt that way, but never noticed it.
"I'm sorry but no. I'm looking for someone." Oikawa says as he tries to get away. The girl's formation became harder.
"Please, please! I promise I'll be a good girl-"
"I already said no!" Oikawa raises his tone, his eyes sharp. He wasn't smiling and suddenly, the girls seemed a bit afraid. When he tried to move past them, they didn't try to hold him back.
He found you leaning against a wall, your eyes closed as you appreciated the sunlight on your face.
He slams his hand on the wall beside your head and you calmly open your eyes. A grin on your lips as you gaze into his intimidating eyes.
"Ah, so this is Oikawa Toru." You say.
"You were right." Oikawa admits, his gaze hard on you. "Those girls can be pretty annoying. And I'm tired of being nice to everyone all the time."
"Then stop. You are not perfect, you can't always be in a good mood."
"I will start saying what I think, no matter the person."
"Great."
"And you will go on a date with me."
You blink, wondering how he had turned things this way. You tilt your head as you place your index finger under his chin.
"Nobody except my father gives me orders." You start, eyeing him maliciously. "But your luck is that I like tough guys."
Oikawa gives you a sly grin. ""My luck indeed."
