"It's just a test." Shinsuke says calmly as he watched you struggle on your desk.
"It's a math test!"
"So?"
"So? You know I'm always stressed when I have those tests." You say, bumping your head into the desk.
"And I never understood why. You are pretty good." He says, looking back into the sports magazine he was reading on your bed.
"That doesn't calm my nerves!" You exclaim, glaring at him.
You two had been good friends ever since you had moved into the neighborhood three years before. His logical and rational behavior was one of the things you liked most about him and he had helped you many times into reaching a decision when your heart battled with your mind.
But now his attitude was just annoying you. That was just hoe he was, you knew that, but right now you didn't want rationality.
"How is it possible that I never see you nervous?!"
"Because that's unnecessary. In the end, it only gets in the way." He says, turning the page.
"What if a big opportunity that you have dreaming all your life comes up? You will get nervous about whether you get it or not."
Shinsuke glances at you. "Not really. I would just do my best so that I would be prepared."
His answers were only fueling your unexplainable anger. "What if it's before a surgery?"
"I'll trust the doctors."
"What if everything is going wrong with your life?"
"How did we end up asking these questions?" He sighs as he looks at his magazine. "I would hope better times would come."
"What if you confess to the girl you like?"
That was a question he had not expected and had him stop in the middle of turning a page. He blinks in surprise as he looks at you.
The words had escaped your mouth before you could stop them. For some reason, your heart beat fast in anticipation for his answer as you squeezed your skirt.
There was a moment of silence in which Shinsuke considered his words. He opted for the safe answer.
"I don't like anyone at the moment."
That was it. You get up quickly as open the door to your room, an angry expression on your face.
"Get out!" You order him. The boy looked at you, confused.
You hated you thought he looked adorable.
"What?"
"I said get out! I can't deal with all that logic right now! I want to be alone!"
He looks at you for a few seconds before getting up slowly and making his way to the door. He stops and looks at you, looking as if he wanted to say something.
And you feel your anger cooling down a bit. You sigh as you raise a hand.
"Look, I'm sorry for how I'm behaving." You start, knowing that you were being a bit unfair. "I'm being an idiot, I know. But, right now, I don't need logic to deal with my stress. I want someone to say 'Yeah, math sucks' or 'We are all on the same boat' or 'You are going to do great because you're amazing' , you understand?"
You gaze at him for a moment but his face remains neutral. And you knew he was thinking about your words.
"I'm not blaming you." You say, feeling a heavy weight on your chest. "I know you're not that kind of person. I... I just want to be alone."
Shinsuke stares at you, not saying anything. You gulp nervously, still holding the door open. Then, with a soft movement, he closes the door and envelopes your figure with his arms.
Your eyes widen and your heartbeat increases. W-What's going on?
"S-Shinsuke? Is e-everything okay?"
Your feel his breath on your neck as he whispers. "I never really said those things because I thought you knew them."
"W-What?"
"Of course you're amazing, (Y/N). You are one of the smartest people I know and that is why I'm always saying you don't need to worry." He pulls away and places his hands on your shoulders. His eyes were gentle and he makes a small smile. "I believe in you."
You inhale sharply, hardly believing Shinsuke was saying those words. You knew he was kind and honest, but you never thought that he had such faith in you.
"I, uh... I..." You babble, lost with your words. "Thanks?" You hadn't meant to sound like a question but it did.
He grins and pats your head. "I'll be going then. I don't want to be a bother."
He opened the door and had given a step outside when you grab his wrist. Shinsuke looks back at you, surprised to see you blushing.
"S-Stay!" You say, trying not to stutter. "I'm sorry for saying those things! I want you here with me."
If you didn't know him better, you would have said that he had blushed a bit. It must have been the light.
He steps inside your room again, closing the door. You sit again by the desk, taking a pencil and opening your nook, determined to study as much as you could.
Shinsuke sits beside you. "What are you doing?" You ask, feeling your heart beating fast.
He grins again. "I'm going to help you. It's more fun that way."
