We were up there at one point
What we saw
Segregation at its best

Camps Bay where the previleged lived
Kayelitsha withstood the test
Of a people once silenced with the force of violence
The windy plains of Cape Flats
Where the vulnerable are exposed
To the elements of evil
And the spirits lie low

From up here the future was not visible
Perhaps it was the mist
But it was clear
That behind the disguise
Of the 'mother city'
Lied the people's cries
Muffled out by the world cup victory

Do we not learn from history?
That euphoria never lasts
And in its absence anger comes
To remind us
That change is coming
Because no longer will the people shed a tear
There will be no place for fear
In the hearts of the people
Who bring drastic change
For the people - by the people
Fullstop.

But the story goes on
As with most novels of life
When will we reach a happy ending?
The long walk to freedom has just started
We can be stronger together on paper
But I feel safer
Believing in what I see
For what my eyes see...
Segregation at its best.
