What was this place?
Where children roamed outside school
And streets filled with more trash
Than the morning rush
And you could sense the hopelessness
Of the street vendors
Who had to navigate through this mess
Of a city turned jungle
Reinforced with concrete walls
That no dreamer could ever scale
You could see the beggers eyes
Filled with pain
They told a story of efforts gone to vain

Then we looked to Miriam
Who sold vetkoeks
Alongst the boulevard
Who worked tirelessly and hard
To send her children to varsity
One does find adversity
In the least of all places
People willing to change fate
Who will not be a number in the crowd
Who will stare fear in the face
And will not be conquered by this place

For in this place many have fallen
Some still carry the burden
Whilst we manuver the streets
Past them in a hurry.
