Chapter 5

Year 1993- Seoul

The city of the rich, powerful and educated fell into darkness as a thunderstorm passed through it suddenly. The bustling, light littered city was swallowed into complete pitch black darkness as the midnight approached. Only the lightening strikes illuminated the city, it was as if there was no one. The officials, ministers, literally everyone was stunned by the phenomena. No one could communicate as the communication towers weren't working either. A fear of having returned to dark ages returned as candles, gasoline powered lamps were brought out within mere seconds.

Meanwhile, in Gangnam, maids scurried away in a hurry carrying lamps, hot towels and warm water in and out of a room. Two women laid on two beds; one was wailing and yelling while the other tried to calm her down despite pain within her own womb she would mutter soothing words.

'Eun Ae-ya, bare a little more...you can do this,' whispered gently Ji Woo in between deep breath after each cramp she felt that were starting to have smaller intervals and were more painful with each passing minute.

'The father should feel the pain, where is that bastard,' yelled Eun Ae moaning as she felt another cramp build up.

'I am here, honey. Forgive me, I love you. Please...doctor do something.' Eun Ae's husband, Cha Min Joon begged hastily from outside the door since they weren't allowed into the temporary labor room.

'Darling, are you okay? Its okay for you to scream too, you can blame and yell me too,' begged another husband from outside the room. It was Ji Woo's husband Kim Ha Joon. The two husbands paced outside the room with worried expressions as Eun Ae kept screaming and Ji Woo muttered soft words of comfort.

As the grandfather clock started its first strike announcing it was midnight; Eun Ae screeched, screamed and wailed as she gave one last push, and her fruits of labour were answered by a bawling little baby boy. The doctor quickly handed over the baby to the well trained nurse by his side and he ran over to Ji Woo how was taking slow deep breaths, the doctor smiled at her and said, 'Its your turn mother, push the baby out.' Ji Woo silently counted the cramps as she pushed, pushed and pushed harder. But the baby wouldn't come out and she was getting exhausted, even breathing was getting difficult. Noticing Ji Woo's discomfort, Eun Ae turned towards her while holding her baby in her arms and whispered, 'You have to give my son his bestfriend quickly, hurry up chingu. You can do this, do you want me to hold your hand.'

Jin Woo turned towards her friend and nodded, as she stretched her hand to Eun Ae who slowly moved and grabbed the hand with the baby still in her arms. The baby who had been wailing silenced immediately.

Eun Ae laughed, 'I think my son, Sun Ho, likes your son already.' A loud thunder followed her words as if someone or something else had acknowledged her words.

'See even the universe agrees with me,' Eun Ae tightened her hand around Ji Woo's lightly.

'I am trying, Eun Ae, I am trying,' cried Ji Woo. Eun Ae and the doctor couldn't do anything but watch her bleed and wait for the baby to decide himself to come out since he was already positioned and his head was crowned*

'Wat is the delay?Why wont the baby come out?', hissed the three sisters standing in the shadows simultaneously.

'Why is the Grim Reaper here too? Will the soul die even before he is born?' as they glanced at the hooded figure by their side. Instead of replying the Grim Reaper only nodded at them and turned to the scene unfolding infront of them.

'Oi, Grim Reaper? you really here to collect someone,' asked an old lady who was sitting on the ground and munching on some peanuts as she was enjoying some movie.

'A death is uncertain until the last moment, he can't tell you who will die. It could be the mother or the baby or maybe both,' answered an old man who stole few peanuts from the old lady's palm sneakily.

'No!' 'Impossible' 'This isn't fated' the three sisters turned to each other and whispered like crazy women.

'As if fate has anymore control over what is happening in this room,' grinned the old lady despite of the serious atmosphere hovering in the room.

'Death will touch someone tonight and he is here to collect the soul, that is final!' said the old man as he chewed another peanut loudly.

'Don't say such ominous things you ugly old man, don't you have souls to take across the Yalu river? what are you doing here?'

'I am off? and you?don't you have memories to wipe,' laughed the old man at the old woman.

'Shush, I think the baby is about to come.'

Eun Ae was drifting in and out as her consciousness faded with her increasing exhaustion. Ji Woo could do nothing but beg the doctor to do something as she watched the bed turn red under her friend's lower body while her skin paled faster with each second.

'Call my husband, inside please.'Ji Woo asked with a soft voice. The doctor looked at Eun Ae who was silently crying, as she stared at her best friend who was slowly drifting.

'Call them,' whispered Eun Ae.
