Getting ready for school again was awkward, but not as awkward as it would’ve been if you had confessed to Nagito at the festival. Or… Would that have really made this any more awkward? You thought as you hesitantly glanced at Nagito by your side, he was waiting for you to finish putting on your shoes at the door. Then, on your way out the door, he awkwardly motioned for you to go first, even though that was normal for him before, it suddenly felt different.
Walking to school was even worse, as you contemplated holding his hand while you stared from beside him. You quickly decided against it, since it’d only be an appropriate move at this point if you had both decided to… Date. At the very least, you were almost sure his worry of hurting you would’ve caused him to reject you, so you were glad you didn’t confess. You didn’t want to live with the sadness of being rejected, nor let him suffer through the probable guilt of rejecting. As long as you both were still friends, it’d be fine anyways right? Nothing could come between your friendship, and this little awkward bump in the road would’ve been nothing compared to the awkwardness of actual dating.
You shivered silently, the weather was a lot colder now that it was early December. “Are you cold?” Nagito said quickly, his usually rather articulate mannerisms faltered, he spoke a little too fast. He was either stuttering quietly lately, or speaking too fast. It was cute in a way, but still confusing. Did that mean he liked you back? Hopefully. The bad luck of the situation could do you both well after all. In love but unable to, ya’know? That kind of cliche love story. You chuckled, “Yeah, a little.” Nagito paused, he could give you his jacket, but wouldn’t that be too intimate? Or maybe not, because you’re just friends? How did all of this work again!? He didn’t have time to think anymore, everything was so confusing and-
“Don’t worry Ko-chan, we’re already here.” You giggled back as you wisped around to him from in front of the school gates. “Come on, don’t make this awkward. We’re still best friends after all, it’s not like anything has changed, right?”

“So did you guys finally-?”
“N-no! B-be a little quieter please…”
Chiaki pouted while she cleaned the desk, “Does he at least know you like him (Y/n)?” She whispered. “Probably.” You gave a short answer, busy thinking and throwing away the trash around you. “Wow… I’m surprised you aren’t a little more upset about this…” She sighed in relief and you giggled back. “I don’t think I’ve gotten over it at all… but his reasons are fair, so I can’t stay hung up over it. I’m gonna honor his wishes, and hope he comes around eventually so I can know how he really feels.” Chiaki nodded, “That’s pretty mature of you (Y/n) I never expected you to be so mature in a situation like this. You were always so nervous about him, but I’m glad you’re doing well! You really are a sweetheart!” You chuckled again, “You think so? I feel uncomfortably out of character!” You whined, then you looked over at Nagito. He was at the other corner of the room, taking down the higher up decorations with Tanaka-kun. “Well, Ibuki-chan is sure he returns your feelings (Y/n)-chan!!” Ibuki came out of nowhere holding a broom and you ducked behind the desk in a heartbeat. “Ibuki! W-What if Ko-chan heard that!?” You whisper shouted. “Oops! Ibuki-chan is sorry…! She was just trying to offer you her support.” She laughed nervously. You continued to hide out of Nagito’s view. “T-thank you for supporting me Ibuki-chan…”
“He’s looking this way, but I don’t think he sees you, he seems confused.” Chiaki said quietly. “Oh god no…!” You screamed silently. “Tell me when he looks away again ok?” Chiaki nodded while looking down at the desks again, acting as if nothing was happening. Ibuki swept the floor playfully, barely sweeping at all, probably spreading more dirt around on accident... “He’s looking away now, you can stop hiding.” Chiaki whispered. You all sighed, “What if he looks again and sees me? You know what… What do I have to lose.” You stood up and began to clean again.
‘I thought I’d heard something…’ Nagito thought to himself, then sighed and turned back to the area he was cleaning, still not used to this indescribable feeling, and worried about how you now felt about him. If you were confessing to him, which seemed rather likely, was it possible that you were mad for being indirectly turned down? He shook his head. ‘No way.’ He thought. You weren’t that type of person at all, in fact, you gave the benefit of the doubt to people that didn’t deserve it at all! And what says you liked him like that anyways? There was no way that’d ever happen right? He was being a little too hopeful. He sighed and smiled, now lost in thought about something completely different from before. ‘So amazing, so helplessly kind and thoughtful…’ he thought. ‘She was even sweet enough to put up with being my friend. Spending so much time around me can’t be good for her health.’ He chuckled. “Darkest one, your aura is grim yet light, may I ask what may be distracting you?” Nagito looked over at Tanaka’s taller form. “I’m fine, It’s nothing you should have to worry about Tanaka-kun.” Gundham shook his head. “That won’t do dark one. We in this class must look out for each other, and today your usually grim self is up in the clouds. Is it the sweet one that resonates in your head?” Nagito stopped for a second, then he sighed. “Hey Nagito, you know you don’t need to hide stuff like that from any of us right?” Kuzuryuu said. “Yeah! At this point, we kinda know what to expect, you’re a pretty weird guy and all, but if it’s chicks, it’s an easy topic!” Soda followed up. “Hey what are you saying Kazuichi! You need to respect women, don’t call them ‘easy’!” Kuzuryuu scolded. “W-what!? That’s not what I meant at all man, I’d never say that! Miss Sonia isn’t ‘easy’ either ya’ know!” Nagito chuckled, at least everyone else was as lively as ever. Even if everything was confusing right now, he’d have time to think, right?

~~~~~Monokuma Theater~~~~~
So I switched up the timeline from how it originally was for this story so that it would match real world time better, but because of this, the whole story might be longer which I’m not very enthused about sooo…. I might change it back?? It fully depends on what I’m willing to pick up and put down plot-wise, and that’s because I want to later split this story off into 3 different books. Despair Arc first, then you’ll see later I guess. You might be able to guess easily what comes next, but I still don’t want to give much away. Anyways, if I stick with going by real world time, I’ll be stuck making this Despair Arc version by itself for 2 more years while trying to constantly fill space with potentially irrelevant chapters. Needless to say I don’t want to do that, but I do want to match up events in real time, so the proper way to do this might be to speed up my timeline. Which will also be complicated since I totally suck at management and stuff ;-; Anyways, kinda wanna let you know cause it might affect how I write certain chapters that aren’t already themed. I don’t know what to do with them. That ‘not knowing what to do with a chapter’ feeling is what spurs me to only write plot specific stuff already. I don’t want to write filler, ever, unless it’s like, a character’s birthday... or like world building or something. Even then, I still want to fit it into the story. Seriously though, I’m gonna wrap up this note since I don’t want to bore you, Damn… it’s… pretty long already huh… Welp, I lastly want to say that it’s kinda fun to think so far into this. I really like story and world building, and this helps me understand story writing altogether. There’s a lot of things I didn’t understand more that I do now. I want to continue to the ends of the earth! So thank you for reading this and fueling my love for the story, even if only a little! (Whoa… Super long Author Note… Wonder how many people are gonna read this.)
